Anatomical Pathology Technician
Location: Hackney, East London
Salary: £21.53 - £29.00 per hour
Hours: 2 days per week
About the Role
Hackney Borough Council is seeking a skilled and compassionate Anatomical Pathology Technician to support the operation of our public mortuary. This vital role ensures the respectful handling of deceased individuals and supports the Coroner's service in post-mortem examinations and related procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the maintenance and running of the mortuary, including storage and post-mortem examination of the deceased.
Ensure compliance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 and relevant HTA codes of practice.
Prepare deceased individuals for post-mortem examinations and assist pathologists and Coroner's officers.
Undertake reconstruction of bodies post-examination.
Collect and transport specimens/samples as directed by the Coroner's office.
Handle the receipt and release of bodies, ensuring proper documentation and respectful care.
Support bereaved families during viewings and religious rites.
Maintain accurate records and assist with administrative duties including IT system updates and reporting.
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including police, funeral directors, and public health services.
Ensure high standards of hygiene and health & safety within the mortuary.
Requirements
Qualification in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent experience.
Knowledge of mortuary procedures and relevant legislation.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal sensitively with bereaved individuals.
Experience working in a clinical or laboratory setting is desirable.
Ability to work flexibly, including participation in an on-call rota.
