Salary: £36,209 per year
Hours: Monday to Friday, 06:00 – 14:30, plus 1 in 6 weekends (day in lieu provided)

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and passionate Deputy Head Gardener to join the horticultural team at a prestigious private estate in Epsom, Surrey. Working closely with the Head Gardener, you’ll play an essential part in maintaining and developing the estate’s extensive gardens and grounds to the highest horticultural standards.

This role combines hands-on horticultural work with leadership and administrative responsibilities. You’ll assist in planning, managing projects, overseeing seasonal planting, and supporting the training and development of the gardening team. Key Responsibilities

  * 

    Assist the Head Gardener with day-to-day operations, planning, and plant procurement.

  * 

    Support the training, mentoring, and supervision of the Gardens Team.

  * 

    Maintain accurate records of training, compliance, and maintenance schedules.

  * 

    Manage the Gardens Department in the Head Gardener’s absence.

  * 

    Participate in garden project work and development of planting schemes.

  * 

    Maintain formal gardens, herbaceous borders, lawns, and the Kitchen Garden.

  * 

    Operate and oversee the use of horticultural machinery, tools, and vehicles.

  * 

    Ensure all equipment is maintained, tested, and compliant with safety standards.

  * 

    Uphold and promote health and safety policies across all garden operations.

  * 

    Lead by example in sustainable gardening practices, encouraging biodiversity and efficient use of resources.

  * 

    Support with estate events, garden tours, and member activities.

  * 

    Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth communication and teamwork.

  * 

    Deliver an exceptional standard of customer service within the Gardens Team.

About You

We are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable horticulturist with a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for gardening excellence.

You will have:

  * 

    RHS Level 3 (or equivalent) horticultural qualification.

  * 

    Broad plant knowledge and hands-on horticultural experience.

  * 

    Proven ability to operate garden machinery and vehicles.

  * 

    PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates (essential).

  * 

    Chainsaw qualification (preferred).

  * 

    Previous experience in senior horticultural, garden management, or landscaping roles.

  * 

    Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills, with confidence using computers.

  * 

    Knowledge of local horticultural suppliers (advantageous).

  * 

    Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with a calm and proactive approach.

  * 

    A full UK driving licence and own transport (essential).
