Project Engineer – Electrical (33kV PC & Substation Projects)

We are looking for a highly capable Electrical Project Engineer to support 33kV power‑conversion and substation works in Bristol. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical engineering expertise, experience working on high‑voltage distribution systems, and the ability to coordinate multiple contractors to ensure compliance with GAT1 specifications, DNO requirements, and relevant industry standards.
This role centres on technical assurance, design validation, construction oversight, and managing interfaces between civil, electrical, protection, and control disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design Review
Review, comment on, and approve contractor drawings, schematics, SLDs, cable calculations, protection studies, and associated technical documents.
* Verify compliance with:
* GAT1 specifications
* DNO standards (UKPN, SPEN, WPD, SSEN etc. depending on region)
* ENA, IEC, and BS requirements
* Identify design clashes, gaps, incorrect assumptions, or non‑compliances and work collaboratively to resolve them.
* Ensure HV equipment specifications (33kV switchgear, transformers, protection relays, SCADA, metering, power conversion equipment) meet project and DNO expectations.
Construction Oversight
* Provide on‑site technical support during installation, commissioning, and integration activities.
* Oversee contractor workmanship and progress to ensure alignment with approved drawings and installation standards.
* Monitor installation of HV/LV cabling, earthing systems, civil/electrical interfaces, equipment installation, and protection/control systems.
* Conduct pre‑energisation inspections and readiness reviews.
* Support FATs, SATs, commissioning programmes, energisation processes, and final handover requirements.
Contractor Coordination & Management
* Act as the key technical interface between civil, electrical, power conversion, protection & control, and SCADA contractors.
* Ensure contractor delivery aligns with project GAT1 expectations, including: Quality and completeness of technical submissions, Timely documentation and design delivery, Adherence to DNO‑approved connection designs, Installation to required HV standards, Provision of test results, redlines, as‑built documentation, Compliance with HSE requirements
* Hold contractors accountable for deviations and drive corrective actions.
* Contribute to project progress meetings, risk reviews, and technical workshops.
Compliance & Documentation
* Ensure all works adhere to CDM regulations, HSE standards, and site safety requirements.
* Maintain accurate project documentation including change control, NCRs, TQs, and engineering logs.
* Produce technical reports, design review records, and interface documentation.
* Support the completion of O&M manuals, as‑built packages, and DNO handover deliverables.
Experience & Qualifications
* Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering.
* Proven experience delivering 33kV power or substation infrastructure projects.
* Strong familiarity with power conversion systems, substations, switchgear, transformers, protection systems, and SCADA.
* Prior experience working with or alongside UK DNOs (UKPN, SPEN, WPD, SSEN).
* Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
