Mechanical Design Engineer – Equipment, Technology and Innovation
We are looking to support our client – a technical equipment and technology supplier to the marine and water sectors – with a requirement for a Mechanical Design Engineer on a permanent staff basis.
This will be a full time role – with the opportunity to work on a hybrid basis (3 days office and 2 from home) with the client’s offices based in either Greater Manchester or Oxfordshire. This role can be located out of either location with periodic travel between the offices and to other client sites likely to be required from time to time. Salaries will be negotiable to candidate’s individual suitability and experience but we anticipate something in the region of 45-50K per annum.
The role is to join the client’s equipment, technology and innovation Group - a small to medium sized and highly expert team who develop and supply a comprehensive range of physical modelling technology for hydraulic, marine and coastal research facilities supplying equipment to more than 300 institutions worldwide. Examples of the equipment delivered include wave generation systems, absorbing beaches, tidal generators, towing carriages, instrument positioning systems, force measuring equipment, dynamometers, and remote platforms. Alongside delivering word class engineering solutions to clients, you will be helping to develop and capitalise new, innovative technologies to enhance their product portfolio and continue the organisation’s growth in strategic markets.
This is a full life cycle design engineering role and the successful applicant will need to possess an excellent grasp of engineering fundamentals. The role would suit an engineer who has gained some experience in industry and is looking to enhance their skill set and progress their career.
With our equipment being specialist, the role would suit either;
• A senior engineer with experience of linear motion systems, precision rotating components, BS8888 / GD&T, limits and fits, and designing for manufacture
• An engineer who has a good grasp of engineering fundamentals / first principles, who has a few years in industry and is looking to progress their career in a new role.
The role also includes opportunities for testing, prototyping and overseeing the installation and commissioning of our equipment, for which the candidate will require a good hands-on approach.
The role is UK based but provides opportunities for travel to meet our clients around the world.
Duties:
Engineering Design
• Undertake engineering design, analysis, and calculations to underpin our equipment designs.
• Participate in design reviews, and recommend design modifications to improve functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software engineers, and project managers, to ensure successful project completion.
• Support in the development of concepts and design solutions for new technology, including planning, testing and verification activities.
• Producing technical reports, specifications, and other technical documentation.
• Produce 3D CAD models and drawings for detailed design.
Essential Education / experience
* Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Mechanical Engineering). Will consider HND or equivalent with a proven track record in design and development of mechanical systems.
* Experience with 3D CAD software (ideally Creo / Solidworks) competent user able to generate 3D models and 2D drawings
* Experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), BS8888, limits and fits and design for manufacture
* Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including mechanics, dynamics and materials properties
Desirable
* Experience in electric motors, rotating machines, mechanical drive / actuation systems, bearings and seals
* Some experience of engineering design for maritime, coastal, or aggressive environments
* “Hands On” experience during fabrication, construction or commissioning phases
