JOB TITLE: Shift Mechanical Fitter
REPORTS TO: Mechanical Supervisor
LOCATION: Lydney area, Gloucestershire

Purpose of the Role
To deliver effective mechanical maintenance and breakdown support across the facility to ensure departmental availability and performance targets are achieved in line with operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain a high standard of Health & Safety, adhering to all safe systems of work and reporting any incidents or near misses.
Diagnose and resolve mechanical breakdowns, returning equipment to safe and effective operation within a reasonable timeframe.
Complete follow-up actions from shift reports and planned inspections (e.g., SAP notifications).
Analyse failure modes of plant equipment, recommending and implementing preventative measures.
Source, collect, and return mechanical spares using the maintenance management system.
Work under mechanical and electrical safety permit systems, including issuing of certificates when necessary.
Evaluate proposed engineering modifications using the site’s Management of Change (MOC) process.
Execute planned preventative maintenance schedules, feeding back via SAP and raising work notifications where necessary.
Collaborate with day teams to resolve recurring or long-term engineering issues.
Maintenance Tasks Include:
Belt inspection, tensioning, and replacement
Bearing and coupling inspections and alignments
Installation and maintenance of rotating equipment (pumps, agitators, fans, rolls)
Repair of seals, packing, compressors, and ancillary systems
Hydraulic and pneumatic system troubleshooting and repair
General fabrication, turning, milling, and grinding
Rigging and lifting of heavy mechanical components
Role Context
This role is critical to ensuring the continuous mechanical reliability of the site’s operations. The successful candidate will support the drive toward improved safety, reliability, and performance within a challenging, fast-paced industrial environment. A flexible approach is essential, including availability for on-call and occasional out-of-hours work.
Candidate Profile
Qualifications & Experience:
NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Strong background in mechanical fitting within a manufacturing, process, or industrial setting
Experience using CMMS systems (ideally SAP)
Solid understanding of Health & Safety legislation in a continuous process environment

Competence in reading technical drawings and performing precise mechanical work

Package Details
Salary: £46,000 per annum
Pension: 5% employer / 5% employee contribution
Life Assurance: 4x salary
TOIL: Time off in lieu available (up to 2 days/month)
Overtime: Available by agreement
Holidays: 25 days + 8 Bank Holidays
Working Pattern
Operates on a rotating day shift pattern including a mix of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts (Monday to Friday)
1 in 5 weekends: 6-hour shifts on Saturday & Sunday
On-call rota: 1 week in 5 (breakdown support)
