Milk Education is working in partnership with a high-achieving and inclusive secondary school in Tower Hamlets to appoint a Deputy Head of Year. This is a non-teaching, full-time position starting immediately after the May half term, with the potential to secure a longer-term role into the new academic year.
The Role:
As Deputy Head of Year, you will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day pastoral care, wellbeing, and behaviour management of students within a specific year group. Working closely with the Head of Year, safeguarding team, and wider pastoral staff, you’ll be a visible and approachable figure, helping to foster a positive school culture and improve outcomes for students.
Key Responsibilities:
Supporting the Head of Year in delivering the school’s pastoral vision
Monitoring and improving attendance, punctuality, and behaviour across the year group
Acting as a first point of contact for students experiencing difficulties in school
Managing detentions, restorative conversations, and follow-ups on behaviour incidents
Liaising with teachers, SLT, external agencies, and parents/carers to ensure joined-up support
Providing one-to-one mentoring or check-ins with vulnerable or at-risk students
Supporting the planning and delivery of assemblies, PSHE, and enrichment activities
Maintaining accurate records and contributing to pastoral reporting and safeguarding documentation
Person Specification:
Previous experience working in a secondary school environment (essential)
Strong knowledge of school behaviour systems and pastoral processes
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and parents
Resilient, calm under pressure, and confident managing challenging situations
Ability to build trust and maintain professional boundaries with young people
Experience supporting with safeguarding, SEND, or attendance is desirable
A positive role model who is passionate about supporting the next generation
Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willing to apply)
