Job Title: English Lead Tutor

Salary: From £34,000 per annum

Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and inspirational English Lead Tutor to join a prison-based education team at HMYOI Werrington. This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a leadership role where you’ll not only deliver engaging and effective English sessions but also play a key part in shaping and leading the Functional Skills provision.
This role involves managing a small team of Functional Skills tutors, supporting curriculum development, and ensuring high-quality teaching that meets Ofsted and contractual standards. You’ll be responsible for driving learner achievement and maintaining a learning environment that motivates and supports progression.
Key Responsibilities:
* Deliver high-quality English teaching sessions and act as a role model to the Functional Skills team.
* Manage and support teaching staff using structured performance and development procedures.
* Support the Assistant Education Manager to meet/exceed contractual KPIs and learner outcomes.
* Lead curriculum planning, development and innovation for English Functional Skills.
* Coordinate and monitor learning resources and facilities to maximise delivery efficiency.
* Participate in quality assurance activities including SARs and QIPs.
* Develop standardised learning and skills programmes that reflect both learner and employer needs.
* Ensure compliance with Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework and MoJ education requirements.
* Manage induction, learner allocation, and behaviour expectations across the provision.
* Build strong working relationships with awarding bodies and ensure compliance with assessment standards.
* Promote positive internal and external partnerships to enhance learning delivery.
* Attend leadership meetings and contribute to strategic and operational goals.
* Maintain up-to-date and accurate learner records in line with GDPR and safeguarding requirements.
* Comply with all HM Prison Services security protocols and health & safety standards.
* Deliver against agreed KPIs relating to learner recruitment, retention and achievement.
* Be fully based on-site in line with prison education delivery requirements.
Essential/Desirable Criteria:
Essential:
* Full Level 5 teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS).
* Subject specialism in English (minimum Level 3).
* Proven experience leading or managing a team of tutors.
* Experience in delivering Functional Skills English.
* Experience developing curriculum/programmes of learning.
* Ability to meet quality standards and drive continuous improvement.
* Strong understanding of Ofsted (EIF) and performance frameworks.
* Excellent communication, mentoring and leadership skills.
* Commitment to safeguarding, equal opportunities and reducing re-offending through education.
Desirable:
* Experience working in a secure, FE, or alternative education setting.
* Knowledge of HR strategies such as appraisals and staff development.
* Ability to manage learner induction, behaviour and allocation processes.
* Track record of successfully improving teaching quality and learner outcomes.
* Understanding of the challenges faced by learners with complex needs or barriers to education.
