Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) - Band 7
working throughout Staffordshire - MUST HAVE OWN TRANSPORT.
RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Delivery of regular Independent NMP clinics weekly depending on the service need
Provide expert support to new NMPs and all prescribing, nursing and recovery staff
To support the development of non-medical prescribing countywide with the Clinical Lead
Provision of healthcare treatments and procedures (including health screening, blood borne virus screening) for people accessing our service in line with the public health and wellbeing agenda
Support and train staff in substance use disorder and alcohol related disorders
To provide clinical supervision on a monthly basis to staff in the absence of Clinical Lead
To line manage nursing/recovery staff as required
To deputise for the Clinical Lead in their absence
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To provide a clinical service to people who use substances and alcohol consistent to their needs including individual treatment and care packages underpinned by a sound evidence base.
To assume a ‘key Prescriber’ role, including the allocation of complex patients, with responsibility for the delivery of medical aspects of the care plan, relevant support and psychotherapeutic interventions, and for communication regarding the patient within the team and with relevant agencies
To carryout alcohol and drug detoxification with service users
To report to the Clinical Lead
To line manage nursing and recovery staff when directed by Clinical Lead and to provide group practice supervision on a monthly basis to staff in absence of Clinical Lead.
To mentor new NMPs and support student nurse placements
To provide regular supervision to nurses and recovery workers monthly as required by the service
When required to investigate serious incidents and to write and present investigation reports. Familiarization with the Trust incident reporting process is essential.
To develop and maintain effective liaison with other agencies including GPs, hospitals, Primary and Secondary care Physical and Mental health services (health and non-health staff), Pharmacies, ICB, Adult/Children social care, housing organisations
To ensure safe and effective care at all times by consistent, effective communication between ORB and other health providers. This will include ensuring appropriate information is available when providing care, for example, Summary care records, prescribing information, release from custody information
Support the development service protocols and policies in line with national guidance for own specialist area.
To ensure that accurate notes of all consultations with service users are recorded clearly and fully in clinical notes and are contemporaneous
To refer service users to appropriate services who may meet their needs in accordance with the objectives in their care plan and to ensure appropriate liaison is maintained
Independently assess, diagnose and formulate care plans for a wide range of people with varying needs
To provide tailored treatment interventions including general health assessments and screening, community detoxification, medication titration, stabilization programmes and relapse prevention plans
To provide information to the Clinical lead, Staffordshire Service Managers and Inclusion Senior Management team when required to do so
To be a specialist resource within the team with regards substance and alcohol use, to Inclusion and to multi-agency partners, including the ability to provide training sessions where required
To provide clinical support to medical staff including external GPs and wider team members
To carryout extensive Independent Non-Medical Prescriber sessions (minimum 6 a week)
To be involved in the development of pathways and protocols specific to the role
Promote partnership work and develop integrated care pathways with local health agencies, both primary and secondary care
Responsible (as part of the clinical team) for the ordering of clinical equipment
To take part in Quality Control – monitoring of clinical equipment and ensuring they are serviced, ensuring medicines are in date and stocked (where needed)
To maintain and promote excellent infection control awareness, knowledge and practice
Provide Health assessments, screening and health clinics to service users. This will include phlebotomy
Train and support other nursing and clinical staff medical staff in delivering health and wellbeing assessments specific to substance and alcohol use such as phlebotomy, ECGs, physical health assessment, vaccinations, BBV screening, sexual health assessment, basic observations.
Provide cover for specific health and wellbeing clinics and specialist nurses as required
Record and document information on electronic care record in line with information governance and record keeping policies
Complete annual NMP requirements and maintain NMP competencies, attend and engage in quarterly Central Prescribers Meeting (CPM) and monthly supervision
Maintain Continuous professional development (CPD) and complete a minimum of 1 audit related to practice per year
To support the development of current information and promotional material available for service users, their families/carers, staff and other professionals.
Promote the role and the service and be an advocate for reducing health inequalities
Qualifications
*
Nursing or Pharmacist qualification and a registered practitioner with the NMC or GPC, or relevant allied Health professional qualification registered with that professional body
Experience
Experience of working as an Independent NMP within a drug and alcohol service
Evidence of working effectively at a senior level in a multi-disciplinary health and social care setting
Significant demonstrable experience of harm reduction approaches to working with people who use substances. This must include knowledge of Naloxone, overdose prevention strategies and needle and syringe programmes
Significant demonstrable experience of harm reduction approaches to working with people who are dependent on alcohol
Evidence of promoting research, evidence based practice, clinical excellence and quality approaches to support outcome focussed care
Experience of the administration and management of medicines according to policy and local protocols
Excellent communication skills and a willingness to promote service user involvement
Psychosocial intervention skills
Case management experience
