Job Description
The Accountant will play a key role within the finance and management team, providing financial insight, reporting and control to support business performance and strategic decision making.
This Accountant position has primary responsibility for the financial management and reporting of the Sunderland site while supporting wider group finance activities.
Key responsibilities include:
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts within agreed reporting deadlines.
- Produce variance analysis and performance reporting to support management decisions.
- Provide financial commentary and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Maintain the general ledger ensuring compliance with UK GAAP and statutory requirements.
Planning and Forecasting
- Support preparation of annual budgets and financial plans.
- Produce regular financial forecasts and updates.
Financial Control
- Maintain strong internal financial controls and processes.
- Manage fixed asset accounting.
- Oversee inventory accounting including stock and work in progress (WIP) valuations.
- Monitor job profitability and review cost write-offs where required.
Compliance and Reporting
- Manage VAT returns and statutory reporting obligations.
- Support year-end audit processes and statutory accounts preparation.
- Provide reporting support to group finance teams.
Business Support
- Provide financial analysis to support operational and strategic decisions.
- Evaluate financial viability of capital expenditure and improvement projects.
- Partner with operational managers to ensure financial targets are achievable.
Team Management & Improvement
- Provide support and guidance across payroll, sales ledger and purchase ledger functions.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, systems and reporting.
Skills & Experience
The successful Accountant will bring strong financial and analytical capability alongside experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
Essential:

Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent experience
*
Experience producing monthly management accounts and financial reports
*
Experience with budgeting, forecasting and financial planning
*
Experience within manufacturing or engineering environments
*
Experience using ERP or MRP systems (e.g. SAP, Syspro)
*
Advanced Excel skills including data analysis and pivot tables
*
Strong analytical and organisational skills
Desirable:
*
Experience with VAT and HMRC reporting
*
Experience with inventory accounting and WIP valuation
*
Previous experience supervising or mentoring finance staff
