Our client is seeking an experienced and qualified Accountant to join their growing team in Godalming. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive professional to take ownership of a diverse client portfolio, providing expert advice across accounting, tax, and compliance matters.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, excellent client management skills, and a collaborative approach to supporting both clients and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Management
Manage a varied portfolio of clients, acting as their main contact for all accounting, VAT, and tax-related queries.
Review accounts, VAT returns, and personal tax returns prepared by junior staff, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Deliver work efficiently, on time, and within budget.
Offer strategic advice to clients, identifying opportunities for process improvements and tax efficiencies.
Accounts and Compliance
Prepare and review statutory financial statements for companies, partnerships, and sole traders in line with UK GAAP.
Ensure all filings and submissions meet Companies House and HMRC requirements.
Oversee bookkeeping and management accounts to ensure records are complete and accurate.
Maintain a high level of technical and compliance standards.
Taxation
Complete and review personal tax returns, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
Prepare and file VAT returns in line with Making Tax Digital (MTD) and other HMRC regulations.
Provide practical tax planning support and identify opportunities for clients to optimise their tax position.
Keep up to date with evolving tax and accounting legislation.
Client Relationships
Build and maintain trusted client relationships through regular communication and proactive support.
Liaise with HMRC and other relevant bodies on behalf of clients.
Deliver value-added advice that supports clients’ broader business and financial goals.
Team Leadership & Development
Supervise and mentor junior team members, offering feedback and development support.
Contribute to training initiatives and share best practices within the team.
Promote a collaborative and high-performing working culture.
About You
Experience
Strong post-qualification experience in general practice, with a focus on tax and compliance.
Proven ability to manage a client portfolio and provide high-quality advisory support.
Experience leading or mentoring junior team members.
Background in practice environment preferred.
Skills & Qualifications
ACA or ACCA qualified (CTA qualification advantageous but not essential).
Sound technical knowledge of UK GAAP, VAT, and personal tax.
Proficient in accounting and tax software such as Xero, Iris, or QuickBooks, along with Microsoft Office.
Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritise effectively.
