Job Description

Assistant Accountant

Are you a sharp, detail‑driven finance professional looking to accelerate your career in a fast‑paced engineering and technology environment? Our client is looking for a proactive Assistant Accountant to play a key role across payroll, month‑end, tax, audit and financial controls.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain broad exposure, develop professionally (AAT/ACCA/CIMA), and make a real impact in a structured, supportive, and innovative business.

What You'll Do

Run end‑to‑end monthly payroll, including calculations, reconciliations and statutory submissions
Own the balance sheet, completing reconciliations and maintaining supporting schedules
Support management accounts with P&L analysis and variance reporting
Deliver efficient month‑end, quarterly and annual close activities
Prepare and submit VAT returns, P11Ds, PSA and HMRC filings
Maintain strong financial controls, supporting SOX testing and documentation
Liaise with external auditors to support statutory accounts
Contribute to budgeting, forecasting and continuous process improvementWhat You'll Bring

A‑level education or equivalent; degree advantageous
Studying (or keen to study) AAT / ACCA / CIMA
Solid understanding of core accounting principles and double‑entry bookkeeping
Experience with balance sheet reconciliations and month‑end activity
Excel‑savvy, confident with financial data and ERP/accounting systems
Highly organised, analytical, and comfortable communicating with non‑finance colleaguesExperience

Experience in finance or accounting
Hands‑on, end‑to‑end payroll experience essential
Exposure to VAT returns, HMRC submissions and audit support
Experience with SOX / US GAAP helpful but not essential
