Summary of position
The Assistant Accountant will support the Financial Controller with the day-to-day financial operations of the business. The role includes responsibility for managing the sales and purchase ledgers, performing reconciliations, assisting with payroll, and contributing to statutory and project-related financial reporting. This is a hands-on, detail-oriented role in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Primary Responsibilities :
Sales Ledger & Debtors
* Process and log new customer purchase orders in line with company policy.
* Raise and issue invoices as instructed by Project Managers.
* Monitor aged debtors weekly and follow up to ensure prompt payments.
Purchase Ledger & Creditors
* Match incoming supplier invoices to POs and post to Sage.
* Maintain accurate electronic records and invoice attachments.
* Reconcile supplier statements monthly and prepare weekly payment runs.
Banking
* Post daily bank transactions.
* Perform monthly reconciliations for all company bank accounts.
VAT & Compliance
* Assist with monthly postponed VAT processes.
* Support the preparation of VAT returns.
Payments & Expenses
* Prepare weekly payment run reports for review.
* Review and log staff expense claims to ensure policy compliance.
* Maintain and reconcile petty cash balances with monthly physical checks.
Payroll & Employee Finance
* Prepare monthly payroll adjustment worksheet for overtime, leave, etc.
* Record changes for starters, leavers, and salary amendments.
Grant Management
* Monitor and submit Innovate UK claims quarterly.
* Liaise with accountants and support annual reporting obligations.
Other Finance Tasks
* Calculate quarterly sales commissions.
* Carry out additional finance-related duties as required by the business.
Skills & Experience required
· Qualified AAT Level 4 (or QBE to the same level).
· 3–5 years' experience in an assistant accountant or similar role
· Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 and Microsoft Office (especially Excel).
· Familiarity with standard financial systems, ledgers, and reconciliation procedures.
· Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
· Strong time management and organisational abilities.
· Sage payroll experience (desirable).
· Experience working with WIP an advantage.
· Clear and confident communicator – both written and verbal.
· Able to work independently and collaboratively within a finance team

Proven experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks or Sage.

Familiarity with PeopleSoft or Xero is a plus.
