Backend Developer (Azure) — 3 Month Remote Contract Outside IR35
Rate: £420–£475 per day
We’re looking for an experienced Azure Backend Developer to join a digital healthcare platform team on an initial 3-month contract, outside IR35.
This is a hands-on role working on a mature Azure-based backend platform, with responsibility across the full software lifecycle - from design and development through to testing, deployment and production support.
You’ll be working with C#, .NET, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Service Bus, Azure API Management and Azure DevOps, contributing to a platform that supports connected patient services.
This role is particularly suited to a developer who can hit the ground running, work independently and own technical delivery end-to-end without requiring day-to-day technical supervision.
What You’ll Be Doing
Develop and deliver backend services using C#, .NET 6+ and Azure Functions.
Build and maintain data access, orchestration and notification services using clean architecture and dependency injection.
Develop and maintain Azure SQL stored procedures, schemas and data access patterns within a mature production database.
Work on event-driven integrations using Azure Service Bus, including message ingestion, transformation and error handling.
Design and consume REST APIs through Azure API Management.
Write meaningful automated unit and integration tests as part of the development lifecycle.
Own CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation using Azure DevOps.
Monitor production services using Application Insights and Azure Monitor, diagnosing and resolving issues proactively.
Participate in incident response and root-cause analysis when required.
Identify technical debt and deliver targeted improvements within sprint capacity.
Work closely with Product Owners to clarify requirements and ensure acceptance criteria are technically deliverable.
Contribute to Agile ceremonies including estimation, planning, reviews and retrospectives.
What We’re Looking For
You’ll need strong commercial experience across:
Strong proficiency in C#, .NET 6+, with solid understanding of dependency injection, SOLID principles, and clean architecture as applied to real production codebases.
Azure Functions — consumption model; understanding of triggers, bindings, and fan-out/fan-in patterns.
Azure API Management — API design, policy configuration, and secure consumer patterns.
Azure Service Bus — message-driven processing, competing consumer patterns, error handling, and retry/dead-letter behaviour.
Azure SQL engineering — stored procedures, T-SQL, schema design, query performance, and deadlock diagnosis at the level required by a mature production database.
Service Bus integration — message-driven processing patterns, error handling, and retry behaviour.
Azure DevOps — CI/CD pipeline authoring, automated testing integration, and deployment management.
Production operational experience — monitoring via App Insights, incident diagnosis, and root cause analysis.
Excellent written communication skills — PR descriptions, PBI commentary, ADO notes, and incident updates must be unambiguous and complete.
Proven ability to work fully independently — evidenced track record of owning a piece of work end-to-end (design, build, test, deploy, operate) without day-to-day technical supervision. Candidates must be able to give concrete examples at interview; assertion of independence without evidence will not be accepted.
Available and responsive during UK core hours (9am–5pm GMT/BST) — this is not negotiable for this role.
Disciplined approach to testing — automated tests are a deliverable, not optional.
Experienced in Agile Scrum delivery — full sprint participation, not just task execution.
Automated testing
Production monitoring and incident diagnosis
Agile/Scrum delivery
Just as importantly, you’ll be someone who can take ownership of work from design through to production. You should be comfortable identifying gaps in requirements, asking the right questions, making technical decisions and delivering without needing constant direction.
Excellent written and verbal communication is essential, particularly when documenting progress, risks, blockers and technical decisions for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable Experience
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
Terraform — infrastructure as code for Azure resources; state management, modules, and pipeline integration.
Azure Entra ID B2C / Auth0 — authentication flows, token validation, and secure API integration.
D365/FinOps integration — OData API, entity model, and data export patterns.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement (CE) — familiarity with CE configuration, customisation, or development. A significant portion of the broader programme work will be delivered in CE by a separate team; the ability to understand CE data structures, entities, and integration points will be a practical advantage in this role.
Logic Apps / Power Automate — integration workflow development and maintenance.
Healthcare domain experience — understanding of clinical workflows and patient data sensitivity.
AI-assisted development tooling (e.g. GitHub Copilot).
