Backend Software Engineer
Location: Hybrid (Kent– 2 days in-office, 3 days remote)
Salary: £50,000–£80,000 DOE
Job Type: Permanent
Work with autonomy. Build from scratch. Modernise a monolith.
Why join our client:
This is not your average software role. Our client is rebuilding a legacy platform from the ground up, using a modern tech stack and best practices. You’ll be working with a lean, capable team of engineers who don’t just use tools — they understand them deeply. If you thrive in autonomy, enjoy solving hard problems, and want to build systems that scale, this is your chance.
Benefits include:
* Flexible hybrid working model (2 days office / 3 days remote)
* High autonomy, no micromanagement
* Work with cutting-edge tools and architecture
* Competitive salary up to £80,000
* Fast-moving, agile development culture
The role:
You’ll be central in breaking down a legacy PHP/MySQL platform and rebuilding it in a new stack — C#, PostgreSQL, Node.js, React. With a strong backend focus, you’ll build APIs, manage infrastructure, and create scalable services. You’ll also take charge of your own DevOps, working with a self-hosted environment to keep things lean.
Key responsibilities:
* Rebuilding a legacy monolith into modern architecture
* Designing APIs and backend systems using C# and PostgreSQL
* Evaluating and rewriting AI-generated code into maintainable, production-ready code
* Contributing to DevOps, infrastructure, and CI/CD pipelines
* Participating in weekly planning and kanban-driven workflows
What we’re looking for:
* Strong backend experience, ideally with C#
* Excellent SQL/database skills (PostgreSQL preferred)
* Proven experience building production systems
* Strong independent problem-solving skills
* Degree in CS or equivalent experience (skills matter more than paper)
Desirable extras:
* GitHub portfolio or open-source contributions
* Experience with Linux/WSL2 environments
* Familiarity with Docker, Node.js, and TypeScript
* Knowledge of legacy systems, PHP, and monolith migrations
* Some frontend experience (React) and DevOps familiarity
Tech stack you’ll be working with
* C# / PostgreSQL / Node.js
