We are currently seeking a resilient, empathetic, and experienced Behaviour Mentor to join an Alternative Provision (AP) school in Mansfield. This role offers the opportunity to make a real difference to young people who require additional behavioural and emotional support to thrive in their education.
The Role:
As a Behaviour Mentor in this specialist setting, you’ll support students who face barriers to learning due to trauma, SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs, or behavioural challenges. You'll work alongside dedicated school staff to deliver a calm, structured, and supportive environment where students can re-engage with learning and grow both academically and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities:

Build positive, trusting relationships with students displaying challenging behaviour.
*
Deliver 1:1 or small group interventions focused on behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and engagement.
*
Provide in-class and out-of-class support to de-escalate incidents and help students regulate their behaviour.
*
Support the implementation of personalised behaviour plans, reward systems, and pastoral strategies.
*
Act as a role model and mentor, helping students develop resilience, empathy, and confidence.
*
Record behavioural observations and contribute to student progress reviews and EHCP targets.
*
Liaise with families, pastoral staff, and external professionals to ensure joined-up support.
*
Uphold safeguarding policies and follow trauma-informed and restorative practice approaches.
Essential Criteria:
*
Experience: At least 1 year supporting children or young people with behavioural or emotional needs – ideally in an AP, SEMH, PRU, or youth work setting.
*
Behaviour Support: Confidence in using de-escalation techniques and setting boundaries. (Team Teach or similar training is a bonus.)
*
Skills: Strong communication, patience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
*
Safeguarding: Knowledge of child protection procedures.
*
DBS: Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply – cost to be covered by applicant).
Desirable:
*
Experience working with students with EHCPs or in care.
*
Training or understanding of trauma-informed practice, mental health, and SEND.
*
Sports, mentoring, or coaching background.
