We are working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Malpas that is seeking a dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs and can bring a calm, consistent and nurturing approach to their work. About the Role As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will be working closely with a young girl in Year 1 who requires additional support to manage her emotional and behavioural needs. This role is both rewarding and challenging – you’ll be her daily source of encouragement, structure, and emotional reassurance. You will: Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day Build a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil Implement and follow behaviour support strategies as advised by the SENCO and external professionals Use positive reinforcement, de-escalation and distraction techniques to help regulate emotional responses Create a calm and structured learning environment to support engagement and participation Assist with classroom tasks, personal development, and emotional well-being activities Support the teacher and wider staff team to ensure the pupil’s safety and inclusion in school life This role will require patience, emotional intelligence, and a strong sense of empathy. You may be a graduate in psychology or education, a youth support worker, a residential care worker, or simply someone who has life experience and the right temperament to support children with additional needs. The ideal candidate will have: Experience working with children or young people with EBD, SEMH, ASD, ADHD or behavioural challenges A calm, consistent and positive approach to behaviour management Excellent communication and interpersonal skills The ability to remain professional and composed under pressure A willingness to work collaboratively as part of a wider school team An understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures A background in teaching assistant roles, care, social work, sports coaching, youth mentoring or counselling is also desirable, but not essential. Full training and support will be provided. Role Details Position: 1:1 Teaching Assistant – Behaviour Support Location: Malpas (easily accessible from Newport) Start Date: September 2025 (or sooner, depending on availability) Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, term-time only (8:30am – 3:30pm) Pay Rate: £12.90 per hour (weekly pay through agency) Contract: Temporary to permanent for the right candidate Why Apply?
