Behavioural Mentor Location: Secondary School, Southwark, London Borough of Southwark Contract: Full-Time, long-term until July 2027(Term-Time Only) Salary: £15 - £17 per hour Start Date: [ASAP] About Us This Secondary school is a dynamic and inclusive secondary school located in the heart of the London Borough of Southwark. The Role We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and proactive Behavioural Mentor to join our dedicated pastoral team. This is a crucial role focused on providing one-to-one and small group support to students who are facing social, emotional, and behavioural challenges. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with teachers, senior leaders, and external agencies to help students overcome barriers to learning, improve their emotional regulation, and engage positively with school life. Key Responsibilities * Student Support: * Provide targeted one-to-one and small group mentoring to students with complex behavioural, emotional, or social needs. * Develop and implement personalised intervention strategies and behaviour plans in collaboration with the SENDCo and pastoral lead. * Support students in developing coping mechanisms, self-esteem, and communication skills. * Act as a consistent and positive role model, building trusting and respectful relationships with students. * In-Class & De-escalation: * Provide in-class support, helping to de-escalate challenging situations and redirect student behaviour in line with school policy. * Supervise students during non-lesson times (e.g., break and lunch) to promote positive social interactions. * Collaboration & Communication: * Work closely with teaching staff and the pastoral team to ensure a consistent approach to behaviour management across the school. * Liaise with external agencies, parents, and carers to provide holistic support for students and their families. * Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress and interventions, providing regular reports to senior staff. * Safeguarding: * Adhere to and promote the school's robust safeguarding and child protection policies at all times. * Report any safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) immediately. Person Specification Essential: * Proven experience working with young people, particularly in a school or youth-focused environment. * Demonstrable experience in supporting students with challenging behaviour and/or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. * A calm, patient, and empathetic demeanour with the ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively with students, staff, and parents. * A strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection principles. Desirable: * A degree or relevant qualification in a related field (e.g., Youth Work, Psychology, Counselling). * Training in de-escalation techniques (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA). * Experience working within an inner-city school environment.
