Job Description

Job Purpose To support students in managing their behaviour, improving engagement with learning, and achieving their full potential. The Behaviour Mentor will work with individuals and small groups to provide guidance, structure, and strategies to help pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop self-regulation, and contribute positively to the school community. Key Responsibilities 1:1 and Small Group Support: Work with targeted students to develop strategies for managing behaviour, improving attendance, and increasing engagement with learning. Mentoring & Coaching: Build positive, trusting relationships with students, providing guidance on social, emotional, and behavioural challenges. Behaviour Monitoring: Track student behaviour, attendance, and engagement, maintaining accurate records and providing regular updates to pastoral staff. Intervention Planning: Contribute to behaviour plans, support strategies, and personalised interventions in collaboration with teachers, SENCO, and pastoral leads. Conflict Resolution: Support students in resolving disputes, mediating conflicts, and developing problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Liaison & Communication: Work closely with teaching staff, parents/carers, and external agencies to coordinate support for students. Promoting Positive Behaviour: Reinforce the school’s behaviour policy, rewards systems, and expectations, encouraging students to meet behavioural and academic goals. Support Pastoral Activities: Assist in school initiatives such as assemblies, enrichment programmes, or workshops to promote social-emotional learning. Person Specification (Essential) Experience of working with young people, preferably in a school, youth work, or mentoring context. Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and pastoral support. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with students. Empathy, patience, and resilience when working with challenging behaviour. Organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate records. Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Desirable: Relevant qualification in youth work, counselling, mentoring, or education support. Experience working with SEMH, SEN, or vulnerable pupils. Training in conflict resolution, restorative practice, or mental health awareness. First Aid or Mental Health First Aid training
