Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Bridge Engineer to lead the operational management and programme delivery for one of Scotland’s most significant trunk road structures.
As part of the Bridges Section, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the inspection, maintenance, strengthening, and risk management. You’ll also contribute to the development of national technical standards and guidance as part of the Overseeing Organisation.
Key Responsibilities
*
Lead and manage the bridge inspection, maintenance, and replacement programmes—ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
*
Develop and implement robust risk and change management processes for the bridge painting contract and support future phases.
*
Manage procurement and delivery of bridge works contracts (£350k–£5m+), and oversee dispute resolution within Delegated Purchasing Authority limits.
*
Maintain and update asset management systems (AMPS, PEARL) and ensure secure record-keeping for all data.
*
Oversee the preparation of annual bridge inspection, maintenance, and scheme bids.
*
Lead the delivery of specialist improvements and structural programmes.
*
Undertake Technical Approval Authority responsibilities for bridge/structure designs, including AIP and departures from standards.
*
Provide technical advice, draft official responses, and support FOI, parliamentary, and ministerial communications as required.
People and Budget Management
*
Supervise the Operating Company Major Bridges Team for the programme delivery.
*
Line manage graduate and summer placement staff, where applicable.
*
Manage the budget and report against spend.
The successful candidate will hold;
*
Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
*
Chartered Engineer (CEng), and member of MICE or MIStructE, registered with the Engineering Council
*
Demonstrable experience in design or assessment of highway or railway structures
*
Strong project management, contract management, financial oversight, and technical skills
