About the Role
One of my local government clients is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Business Support Officer to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced administrator or business support professional looking to play a key role in delivering high-quality administrative and financial support to a busy local authority service.
You’ll be responsible for managing essential business functions, ensuring compliance with council policies, and providing accurate and timely management information to support effective service delivery.
Key Responsibilities

Operate and maintain all elements of the service’s financial systems, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
*
Identify and recover overpayments, with autonomy to agree on repayment plans within established frameworks.
*
Procure goods and services through approved methods of procurement.
*
Make payments using a Newport City Council corporate credit card, following all internal procedures.
*
Manage, maintain, and verify performance information, including data analysis, reporting, and dissemination of key insights.
*
Act as the first point of contact for teams within the service, providing information, advice, and guidance to resolve queries efficiently.
*
Communicate effectively with colleagues, management, and partner agencies.
*
Organise meetings, prepare agendas, record accurate minutes, and complete all associated follow-up actions.
*
Support and assist with service-led projects.
*
Safeguard IT equipment, corporate accounts, and sensitive data in line with council policies.
*
Undertake additional duties as required to meet the needs of the service.
About You
The ideal candidate will bring strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You should be comfortable managing financial processes and systems, liaising with multiple stakeholders, and maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive data.
Essential skills and experience:

Proven experience in an administrative or business support role.

Strong IT skills, including experience using MS Office and management information systems.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience managing financial or procurement processes within a structured environment.

Ability to analyse and report data accurately.

A collaborative and adaptable approach to work.
