Job Description

A highly regarded public organisation dedicated to conserving England's historic environment is looking to appoint a Chartered Architectural Technologist to join its expert Regions Group. This is a rare opportunity for a Chartered Architectural Technologist to contribute directly to nationally important heritage funding programmes that deliver real community and conservation outcomes. This full-time, fixed-term contract runs until March 2026 and offers hybrid working from one of the following regional offices: Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth, Cambridge or London. The Chartered Architectural Technologist's role As a Chartered Architectural Technologist, you will work as part of a central technical team responsible for delivering targeted heritage grant programmes across England. You will use your technical expertise and analytical skills to advise on the design, repair, and reuse of traditional buildings at risk, supporting local community groups, private owners, building trusts and professional advisers. The Chartered Architectural Technologist will assess detailed technical submissions, review specifications and drawings, and guide applicants to ensure that their proposals meet conservation, repair and sustainability criteria. You will also evaluate the potential for community benefit, advise on funding readiness, and monitor works throughout the delivery cycle-acting as a consistent technical resource for regional teams. Site inspections, including those requiring physical access to scaffolding and confined spaces, are a key part of this role. Evening or weekend meetings with stakeholders may occasionally be required. The Chartered Architectural Technologist Applicants must be a current member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) or hold a qualification recognised by CIAT. The successful Chartered Architectural Technologist will have strong experience in the repair, alteration and sustainable upgrade of traditional buildings, particularly within historic contexts. You'll be confident reviewing conservation-led design solutions and providing clear written advice and technical evaluations. A sound understanding of conservation principles, grant programme processes, and the broader benefits of heritage regeneration is key, along with excellent interpersonal and report-writing skills.
