ALink Recruitment are working with a small but prestigious engineering consultancy based in Stratford. They are a leading provider of structural examinations, investigations and enabling works across the UK railway network. With a growing footprint and a reputation for reliability, compliance and innovation, they are trusted to keep critical rail assets safe and operational.
The client are now looking to appoint a Structures Engineer to join their internal engineering team. This is a key technical role, responsible for reviewing and verifying the quality of structural examinations while also supporting the development of their junior engineering staff through active mentoring and training.
The Role
As a Structures Engineer, you will provide technical oversight on the inspection and assessment of civil infrastructure assets — including bridges, culverts, tunnels, retaining walls, gantries and buildings. Working closely with the internal inspection teams and external stakeholders, you will ensure that our output meets the highest engineering standards and contractual obligations.
You’ll also play a vital part in growing their internal capability by mentoring STE engineers, supporting examiner development, and ensuring quality control across all deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
* Review technical inspection, examination, and survey reports, ensuring they meet industry standards, client requirements and our internal QA thresholds.
* Provide engineering recommendations to support asset management decisions — identifying fitness-for-purpose concerns and potential structural defects.
* Support the planning and delivery of structural examinations in accordance with Network Rail standards and other relevant specifications.
* Conduct quality assurance reviews on examination reports prior to submission to the client.
* Work across a range of infrastructure categories including rail, highways, utilities, aviation, and civil buildings.
* Provide feedback and training to our engineers and examiners to raise reporting standards and support progression through STE competencies.
* Collaborate with the Engineering Manager to ensure technical delivery is aligned with project and client expectations.
* Liaise with supply chain contractors to support safe and efficient access to difficult locations (e.g. working at height, confined spaces, etc.).
* Travel to site as required across the South East and Midlands to support inspections or QA checks.
What We’re Looking For
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with ICE, IStructE or similar professional body (essential).
* HNC, HND or degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
* Experience in structural inspection, assessment, or asset management of infrastructure assets.
* Strong working knowledge of infrastructure standards and specifications (e.g. Network Rail standards
* Excellent report writing and technical review skills.
* Previous experience with bridges, culverts, retaining walls, tunnels, or other major infrastructure assets.
* Confident communicator with the ability to deliver constructive feedback and mentor junior staff.
* STE2 competence preferred (or STE1 with evidence of recent relevant experience).
* Valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally as required.
