Become a Community Teaching Assistant – Support Beyond the Classroom
Are you passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential? We’re looking for a resilient, adaptable, and proactive Community Teaching Assistant to provide tailored support for pupils with complex behavioural and learning needs. This is a unique role where you will work not only in school settings but also across local learning hubs, community spaces, and occasionally in pupils’ homes to deliver personalised, focused learning and behavioural support.
Pay: £24,763 – £26,407 annually (Grade 8, points 12–15)
Contract: Full-time, fixed term for 39 weeks per year
Start Date: Immediate start available
Location: Chesterfield and surrounding areas
Positions: Multiple openings
About the Alternative Provision Setting
You will work with young people who have faced challenges in mainstream education, often due to Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Pupils may struggle with impulse control, social interactions, or emotional regulation, and many benefit from a flexible, creative approach to their education.
As a Community Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in providing 1:1 or small group support, wherever it’s needed — this could mean working on-site, at community learning hubs, or even at a pupil’s home. You’ll encourage engagement through both academic support and enrichment activities, such as sports and outdoor learning, which are central to building resilience, confidence, and positive relationships.
Your Responsibilities
As a Community Teaching Assistant, you will:
*
Travel across sites, homes, and community hubs to deliver tailored teaching and support.
*
Provide 1:1 or small group tuition, adapting strategies to individual needs.
*
Support pupils in both academic learning and personal development, with a strong emphasis on sports and outdoor activities.
*
Model positive behaviours, de-escalate challenging situations, and encourage pupils to make positive choices.
*
Work alongside teachers, senior leaders, and families to implement personalised learning and behaviour plans.
*
Help pupils engage during transitions, in social settings, and during enrichment opportunities.
*
Be flexible, supporting pupils wherever they learn best — whether in school, at home, or in the wider community.
What We’re Looking For
We want someone who:
*
Holds a full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle and business insurance.
*
Has GCSEs or equivalent in English and Maths.
*
Has confidence and experience in managing challenging behaviour, using trauma-informed and de-escalation techniques.
*
Enjoys sports and outdoor activities and can use them to engage and motivate young people.
*
Possesses excellent communication skills to build trust and relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families.
*
Has the resilience, adaptability, and positive outlook to work across varied environments.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
While not essential, the following will strengthen your application:
*
Training in behaviour management approaches (e.g. Team Teach, Restorative Practice).
*
A First Aid qualification.
*
Experience working within SEMH, alternative education, or youth/community settings.
*
Ability to plan and deliver activities that combine learning with physical or creative engagement.
*
Strong problem-solving skills to tailor approaches to individual pupils.
