Job Description

Nelson Permanent Placements is working with a family-owned company near Birmingham who is looking to hire a Control Systems Engineer to join their growing team. Our client specialises in organo-sulphur chemistry and high-pressure hydrogenation, making and supplying chemicals worldwide in both small and large amounts. Their products are used in the Pharmaceutical, Agrochemical, and Speciality Chemical industries. They also offer custom-made chemicals, contract manufacturing, and process improvement services. To be considered for this role as a Control Systems Engineer you will be: * Skilled in configuring and programming Allen Bradley control systems using RS Logix 500, Studio 5000, and FactoryTalk View. * Basic knowledge of relevant standards such as BS/IEC 61003, 61131, 61508, 61511, and 62443. * Good understanding of functional safety concepts, including SIL, LOPA, and Safety Instrumented Systems. * Familiar with project and engineering documents like Cause & Effect diagrams, Loop Drawings, Control Philosophy, Electrical Schematics, URS, FDS, and Datasheets. * Experienced with various communication protocols, including Industrial Ethernet, DH+, Modbus, ProfiNet, and Serial. Knowledge of OT Cyber Security, IIoT, and AI is a bonus. * Preferably has some background in chemical manufacturing, large-scale processes, Hazardous Areas (ATEX), and Intrinsic Safety. * Experience in instrumentation engineering is highly desirable. * Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar engineering drawing software. Key Responsibilities of a Control Systems Engineer: * Maintenance – Identify and fix control system faults. * Project Work – Design, specify, and install control and safety systems (such as PLCs, BPCS, SIS, DCS, SCADA, HMI). * Management of Change – Review and approve change proposals, then update and modify control systems as needed. * Communication – Work with people across the company and with external contacts like control system suppliers, integrators, and contractors. * Health, Safety & Environment – Promote a safe working culture in the Electrical and Instrumental Department, ensuring all installation and maintenance work meets legal, company, and safety standards. * Training – Help develop and train team members on control systems. Requirements of a Control Systems Engineer: * A minimum of an HNC in Controls, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering. * At least 5 years of hands-on experience in an industrial manufacturing environment after completing the HNC. * The role requires a flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to manage multiple complex tasks at the same time and respond to changing priorities.
