Curriculum Leader of Drama Location Reading, Berkshire, South East England Permanent, Full-Time Job Description The Curriculum Leader of Drama is responsible for leading and managing the Drama department within the educational setting. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining a high-quality drama curriculum that engages students and supports their academic and creative development. The post holder ensures that teaching standards are consistently high and that the department meets relevant national educational requirements and school objectives. The Curriculum Leader of Drama oversees the planning and delivery of lessons, assessment strategies, and extracurricular activities related to drama. They provide professional leadership and guidance to teaching staff, support continuous professional development, and contribute to whole-school initiatives. Key Duties and Responsibilities Lead and manage the Drama department, ensuring effective curriculum planning, delivery, and assessment that meets national education standards. Design, review, and update the drama curriculum to reflect current educational best practise and engage students of varying abilities. Monitor and evaluate teaching and learning within the department to promote continuous improvement and outstanding student outcomes. Support and mentor teaching staff within the department, facilitating professional development and sharing best practise. Organise and coordinate drama productions, performances, and extracurricular activities to enhance students’ learning experiences. Manage departmental resources effectively, including budgeting for equipment, materials, and facilities. Develop strategies to promote student engagement and participation in drama, fostering creativity, confidence, and communication skills. Collaborate with other curriculum leaders and senior leadership to support whole-school priorities and initiatives. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations relevant to drama activities and equipment. Analyse student performance data to inform teaching strategies and report progress to senior leadership and parents or carers. Required Qualifications A recognised teaching qualification suitable for the United Kingdom education system. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent. Degree or equivalent qualification in Drama, Theatre Studies, Performing Arts, or a closely related discipline. Education Degree-level education in Drama or Performing Arts. Continued professional development relevant to curriculum leadership and drama education. Experience Substantial teaching experience in Drama at secondary school level. Proven experience of curriculum leadership or middle management within a school setting. Experience of planning and delivering engaging drama lessons and activities across a range of student abilities. Track record of contributing to school improvement and raising student achievement. Experience managing department budgets and resources is desirable. Knowledge and Skills Comprehensive knowledge of the National Curriculum for Drama and relevant examination specifications. Strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to motivate and support staff. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage students, staff, parents, and external partners. Effective organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Proficiency in using educational technology and digital resources to enhance learning. Sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection requirements. Ability to analyse data and implement strategies to improve student outcomes. Preferred Qualifications Postgraduate qualification in education, curriculum leadership, or a related field. Experience of working with examination boards and understanding assessment frameworks. Training or experience in drama direction, stage production, or technical theatre. All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role.
