Design Manager - Infrastructure & Civil Engineering

Red Sky Personnel is recruiting on behalf of a leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractor, known for delivering technically complex and high-value projects across the UK. As they continue to grow and deliver key infrastructure frameworks, they are now looking to appoint a Design Manager to lead technical delivery across clean water, wastewater and biosolid treatment schemes, pipelines, trunk mains, and pumping stations.
The Role
This is a key leadership role responsible for delivering technical solutions in line with project and business objectives. You'll lead multi-disciplinary design teams, manage external consultants, and ensure all engineering outputs meet client requirements, statutory standards, and internal quality benchmarks.
You'll work closely with engineering and operational teams to produce robust, innovative, and maintainable solutions across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of design outputs and technical compliance from concept through to delivery.
Lead internal teams and external design consultants to deliver on time and to budget.
Manage engineering schedules, forecasts, and budgets to support commercial objectives.
Ensure designs are aligned with statutory regulations, customer requirements, and safety standards.
Drive value engineering and risk mitigation while identifying design opportunities.
Collaborate with stakeholders, supply chain partners, and project teams to ensure smooth delivery.
Maintain strong relationships with project managers, engineers, and on-site teams.
Manage change control processes and maintain project design trackers and documentation.
Contribute to the selection of specialist subcontractors and suppliers.
About You
Essential:
10+ years' experience in design and design management within civil engineering/infrastructure.
Proven track record in clean/foul water infrastructure (drainage systems, pumping stations, pipelines).
Strong understanding of BIM and common data environments.
HNC/Degree in Civil Engineering or similar discipline.
Member of a recognised engineering institution (or working toward).
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong project and people management experience.
Proactive, self-motivated and solutions-oriented.
