Development Director Location: Aspect House, Blantyre Salary circa £100,000 per year (DOE), plus an excellent benefits package including: 40% (performance related) bonus per annum, private healthcare (family) and £550 p/m car allowance. Full Time / Permanent Flexible Working Pattern Closing Date: 07/09/25 Help us create a better future, quicker Role A key member of the SPT Strategic Portfolio Leadership team, sharing accountability with peers for development and delivery UK’s critical transmission reinforcement projects. The portfolio is high value with complex and critical projects urgently required to deliver the UK’s Net Zero target with a total value of c.£3.75Bn+. Drive the development of all our large super grid transmission projects ensuring key milestones for land, planning and consenting activities are achieved to meet delivery timescales. The role will cover all large development projects in the Strategic Portfolio aligned with East & West delivery pipelines ranging from 275kV to 400kV. These include new overlines, new substations, upgrading existing overlines and substations to enable greater capacity of renewable energy to flow to UK’s demand centres. What you’ll be doing Define the appropriate allocation for the leadership and management of individual projects / programmes through consideration of level of investment, resource utilisation, geographical location & environment, complexity and risk. Accountable for setting out the consenting, land and commercial contract strategy. Responsible for leadership of Strategic Portfolio Development team totalling approximately 25-30 permanent staff and large number of key strategic EPC partners to deliver SPT’s a large portfolio of complex projects across the SPT licence area. The EPC partner teams will include indirect management circa 200+ people including engineering, procurement, commercial, construction resources. Ensure that project risks are effectively identified and managed to deliver projects in line with budget and to programme. Including share risks with EPC partners. Also, managing and controlling commercial risks on open book contracts. Drive all opportunities to accelerate timelines in line with OFGEM ASTI frameworks and incentives. Establish and operate a robust governance framework across the development portfolio to ensure that all regulatory and company-specific reporting and approval processes are followed. In particular, comprehensive records must be maintained of key risks, issues, actions and decisions to ensure that SPT can substantiate its approach to the development and delivery of the programme should this be necessary, for example in a regulatory investigation. Accountable for budget management across the development portfolio to ensure adherence to all group and regulatory financial controls and reporting requirements. Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders to positively influence and impact upon the delivery of projects and wider Transmission and business objectives. Including other Government official, agencies and local authorities. Other TO s, OFGEM, NESO and EPC strategic partners. Leading, developing and motivating a high performing team, with a strong delivery and commercial focus. Holding the project management and project teams to account for critical milestones in planning, consenting and land acquisitions. Strong leadership of team through planning and consenting processes with public consultation and driving statutory processes ahead of critical path. Ensure compliance with all management systems required for the professional and efficient delivery of the assigned investment programme, including externally accredited systems for Health and Safety, Environmental and Quality management. Leading on the identification and prioritisation of continuous improvement initiative within Project Development processes and supporting wider cross organisational improvements to drive improved project outcomes. Leading the project teams managing transmission connections customers to ensure in service dates are on track, ensure customer securities align with contracting liabilities. What you’ll bring A strong commercial focus with significant high CAPEX value project/programme management experience and understanding of large EPC project development and delivery. An understanding and experience of financial planning for large capital projects. An in depth understanding of land and planning processes in Scotland, along with statutory processes such as Compulsory purchase orders. Including all Pre-construction activities and tasks required to undertaken as early as possible in project lifecycle ensure robust due diligence on engineering solutions being developed. Proven experience of successfully leading and developing large multi-disciplined teams. A strong delivery focus with experience of achieving excellent outcomes in demanding timescales within a high-pressured project environment. The ability to step back from the detail and focus on the key issues and strategic vision required to ensure project development milestones are achieved. Be confident and assured in managing multiple project development issues whilst analysing and prioritising key risks and issues for the project on an ongoing basis. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills Skilled at developing and maintaining strategic relationships with EPC partners, regulators, leadership and across the industry Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations and practices. Project Management qualification or extensive capital Infrastructure programme / project management experience. Minimum Criteria * Degree level education, preferably in a transferable sector to the role. * Excellent Stakeholder Management experience * Successful track record of developing projects through the development phase to handover to delivery * Previous experience developing large infrastructure projects * Excellent project leadership skills, across large programmes of complex and high value projects. * ­A strong ability to engage, influence and negotiate with EPC partner, other TO s , NESEO, local authorities and OFGEM regulator at director/executive level.
