About this Position:
We are seeking a Digital Electronics Hardware Engineer to join a team responsible for the design, commissioning, and testing of high-speed digital electronics hardware, specifically Printed Circuit Assemblies (PCAs) within complex airborne radar systems.
The successful candidate will take ownership of robust digital hardware designs and may also be required to supervise and mentor less experienced engineers on the project.
This role is based at our customer’s site in Edinburgh, with the potential for hybrid working following an initial onsite familiarisation period.
Job Responsibilities:

Create high-quality, robust digital electronics designs
*
Document and record technical deliverables
*
Support hardware and system-level integration and verification activities
*
Maintain configuration control of all designs
*
Provide regular progress updates and reports
Experience Required:
Essential:
*
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in designing high-speed digital electronics using modern FPGAs and/or microprocessors
*
Knowledge of high-speed serial communication interfaces/protocols (e.g. PCIe, Ethernet/IEEE802.3, SPI, I2C) and high-speed memory architectures (e.g. DDR3/4)
*
Proficiency in high-speed design techniques, including signal termination, impedance control, matched length tracking, power/ground plane design, and decoupling
*
Hands-on experience integrating hardware, firmware, and software on FPGA and microprocessor-based PCAs
*
Competence in signal integrity and power integrity analysis at board level using tools such as Hyperlynx SI/PI or equivalent
Desirable:
*
Proficiency in schematic capture tools, such as Mentor Graphics (Siemens EDA) DxDesigner
*
Experience with functional simulation and timing analysis at circuit level
*
Familiarity with PCB layout processes and providing design guidance to layout engineers
*
Ability to coordinate daily technical activities and work closely with lead engineers and cross-functional teams
*
Experience collaborating with manufacturing/production departments and external suppliers
*
Ability to analyse system-level requirements and translate them into detailed hardware specifications
*
Skilled in hardware debugging and testing
*
Experience in full hardware design lifecycle, including participation in peer and formal design reviews
*
Competence in writing clear, concise technical documentation
*
Background in aerospace, defence, or other complex/high-reliability systems
*
Familiarity with FPGA/software languages such as VHDL, C, or Assembler
*
Experience in hardware requirements capture, using requirements management tools, and formal verification
*
Prior experience supervising engineers and managing small technical teams
Qualifications:
*
Honours or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering or a related STEM discipline
*
UK citizenship (mandatory for SC clearance eligibility)
*
Current valid SC clearance is advantageous
