Job Description
Lewisham Council is looking for an exceptional leader to take on the role of Director of Housing Services. Reporting to the Executive Director of Housing, Regeneration & Public Realm, you will have overall responsibility for a diverse and critical portfolio, including Housing Needs and Refugee Services, the Private Sector Housing Agency, and the Housing Partnership & Service Improvement team.
This is a pivotal role at the heart of Lewisham’s vision for inclusive, safe, and sustainable housing. You will shape strategy, drive innovation, and deliver services that meet the needs of our residents today while planning for the future.
What you’ll be doing
Providing strategic leadership across housing services, ensuring high-quality, customer-focused delivery.
Acting as the Council’s expert advisor on housing needs, homelessness, private sector housing, and home ownership.
Leading and managing multi-million-pound programmes, ensuring best use of resources and strong contract management.
Building and maintaining effective partnerships with housing providers, Registered Social Landlords, regional and national bodies, and local stakeholders.
Supporting the Mayor and elected members with expert advice to shape housing policy and strategy.
Ensuring services adapt to local, regional and national policy changes, while influencing housing agendas beyond Lewisham.
Overseeing a service budget of around £30m, ensuring financial efficiency and effective resource allocation.
Driving a culture of performance, innovation, equality, and continuous improvement.
Contributing to the wider corporate leadership of the Council and deputising for the Executive Director when required.About you We are seeking a highly motivated, collaborative and forward-thinking leader who will bring:
Extensive senior leadership experience in housing or a related field, ideally within a large and complex organisation.
A track record of developing and implementing housing strategies and policies that deliver tangible results.
Strong financial acumen, with experience managing significant budgets and resources.
The ability to build trusted relationships with Members, partners and stakeholders, and to influence at a senior level.
Excellent leadership skills – able to inspire, empower, and deliver through others.
In-depth knowledge of housing legislation, local government operations, and the challenges facing the sector.
