Job Summary: Specialist Teaching Assistant (EHCP/SEMH) - Blackpool PRU We are seeking resilient, empathetic, and highly skilled Teaching Assistants (TAs) to join our successful Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) team in Blackpool, Lancashire. This vital role focuses on providing intensive support to vulnerable pupils who have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) for Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviours. The Role: 1:1 and Small Group Support As a specialist TA in the PRU, your focus is on pastoral care, emotional regulation, and educational engagement within very small class sizes. EHCP Implementation: Provide tailored 1:1 support, ensuring all targets and provisions outlined in the pupil's EHCP are met and accurately recorded. Behaviour and Emotional Support: Consistently apply de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour management strategies to help pupils regulate their emotions and remain engaged with learning. Therapeutic Mentoring: Build strong, trusting, and non-judgemental relationships, acting as a key mentor and advocate for pupils facing complex challenges and trauma. Curriculum Assistance: Support the class teacher in delivering differentiated lessons, focusing on literacy, numeracy, and vocational skills. Collaboration: Work closely with the SENCO, external agencies, and the pastoral team to ensure a holistic, multi-agency approach to pupil well-being and progress. Essential Requirements and Skills The ideal candidate will be passionate about making a difference and possess a unique combination of skills: PRU/SEMH Experience: Proven, demonstrable experience working directly with children or young people with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour, ideally within a PRU, specialist school, or similar alternative provision setting. EHCP Knowledge: A clear understanding of the purpose and practical implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Core Competencies: Exceptional resilience, patience, a calm presence under pressure, and the ability to maintain professional boundaries. Training (Desirable): Certification in a recognised physical intervention or de-escalation strategy (e.g., Team Teach, Positive Handling) is highly advantageous. Safeguarding: A robust commitment to safeguarding and child protection. Compliance: Must hold or be willing to apply for an Enhanced DBS check registered to the Update Service.
