Electrical Design Engineer
London & South East | Residential M&E | £50,000 - £70,000 + package
This is a role for an Electrical Design Engineer who wants to stay close to the work, not sit miles away from the projects they are designing.
You will be joining a privately owned M&E contractor with a strong residential workload, working directly with the Operations Director across both pre-construction and live project delivery. The role needs someone who can support early-stage design, interrogate drawings, help shape technical solutions and keep design information moving properly once projects are on site.
This is not just a drawing role. You will be involved before the project starts, helping the business understand design risk, buildability, specification, cost impact and programme. Once the job is live, you will remain involved, supporting project teams with technical queries, design coordination, changes, RFIs, submittals and design-related issues through to completion.
What you’ll be doing
Working closely with the Operations Director to provide electrical design support across tender, pre-construction and delivery.
Reviewing drawings, specifications and employer’s requirements to identify design gaps, risk, buildability issues and technical opportunities.
Producing and developing electrical design information for residential projects, including lighting, power, containment, fire alarms, access control, landlord supplies, small power and associated building services systems.
Supporting project teams with design coordination, technical queries, RFIs, submittals, drawing comments and design changes.
Liaising with clients, consultants, internal project teams and supply chain partners to keep design information clear, accurate and commercially sensible.
Helping ensure designs are practical, compliant, coordinated and suitable for installation on fast-moving residential schemes.
Supporting procurement and delivery teams with technical input on specialist packages, equipment selection and subcontractor design information.
Staying involved through installation, commissioning and handover, making sure the design intent is carried through properly on site.
What you’ll need
A strong electrical building services background, ideally gained with an M&E contractor or consultancy working closely with contractors.
Residential project experience is important. High-rise residential, apartments, mixed-use schemes, private residential, build-to-rent or similar would all be relevant.
The ability to read, review and challenge electrical drawings, specifications and technical information.
A practical understanding of how electrical systems are installed on site, not just how they are designed on paper.
Confidence working with senior operational staff, project teams, clients and consultants.
Good technical knowledge across electrical building services, including power, lighting, fire alarms, containment, life safety systems and residential infrastructure.
The judgement to spot design issues early and help resolve them before they become site problems.
Why this role is worth looking at
You will have direct access to the Operations Director and proper involvement in how projects are planned, designed and delivered.
The role gives you more influence than a traditional design-only position, with exposure across pre-construction, technical coordination and live delivery.
You will be working on residential M&E projects where good design support genuinely affects programme, cost, quality and client relationships.
For an Electrical Design Engineer who wants a broader role with more commercial and operational visibility, this is a strong move.
