Job Description

Job Overview The Design Manager will support the Design Engineering Manager throughout the entire project lifecycle—from opportunity and pre-construction phases through to practical completion and soft landings. The role requires proactive collaboration with Design Engineers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to track the delivery of RIBA Stage 3, Stage 4 and Stage 5 design outputs, perform gap analysis, develop comprehensive package listings or TIDPs (Task Information Delivery Plans), and structure the programme in Primavera P6. A key aspect of the role includes change management—identifying Early Warning Notices (EWNs) and variations and ensuring these are reflected appropriately in the P6 programme through instructions and compensation events. The Design Manager will be responsible for forming and maintaining a standards and regulations tracker based on the works information, and for ongoing baseline monitoring to ensure compliance and consistency. The role will contribute to the setup and maintenance of design assurance processes, including development of V&V (Verification and Validation) matrices and Design Management/Technical Assurance Plans. In addition, the Design Manager will apply BSRIA BG6 guidance to establish and manage a robust Design Responsibility Matrix (DRM). Key Duties and Responsibilities · Promote and embed health and safety considerations throughout the design process. Ensure safe-by-design principles are applied in line with legislative and project-specific requirements. · Support the delivery of Sustainability Action Plans by ensuring sustainable design practices are implemented and tracked from early stages through to completion. · Manage design deliverables in accordance with CDM 15, the Design Responsibility Matrix (DRM), Primavera P6 programme, and the Project Design Management Plan. Identify design changes early and anticipate potential risks. · Track design progress against programme milestones. Support reporting through dashboards or trackers; experience with Aconex and Power BI is advantageous. · Maintain clear and professional communication with the client and their representatives. Ensure client requirements are understood, documented, and reflected in the design process. · Lead and document regular design reviews in line with the Design Management Plan and Technical Assurance Plan. Monitor compliance with relevant codes, standards, and best practices. · Input into/utilise the pre-construction Technical Risk Review (TRR) to identify, assess, and manage design risks. Escalate critical risks and mitigation measures to the project team as needed. · Facilitate cross-disciplinary coordination between architects, structural engineers, contractors, and specialist consultants to ensure design integration and alignment with project goals. Competency Profile · Demonstrates understanding of HSEQ principles, and CDM/BSA regulations, and integrates them into design processes. Promotes safe-by-design approaches and considers sustainability at all stages. · Ensures compliance with project standards, technical requirements, and quality management systems. Supports design assurance and continuous improvement initiatives. · Applies strong working knowledge of design coordination tools. Skilled in preparing agendas, recording actions, and driving interdisciplinary design reviews. Proactively cross-references design output against British Standards, client requirements, and regulatory guidance to ensure technical compliance and consistency across disciplines. Previous experience of GRIP, PACE, Pathway advantageous. · Work on standard IT business applications such as Microsoft 360 including intermediate to competent level of skill in Word, Excel PowerPoint etc. Appreciation of digital engineering such as BIM/CAD. Adapts to emerging technologies to support efficient design management. · Strong knowledge of MEPH systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, communications, and fire safety design · Understanding of building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards, including BREEAM. Has experience of referring to MEPH British standards. Knowledge of National Grid, National Rail, and sector specific regulations/requirements is advantageous. Qualifications · Minimum of 3 years of experience in Design Management, or Project Management with a bias to design: evidencing delivery to program and significant experience in design assurance. · Bachelor’s degree/HND or similar in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering, or related field Working towards professional registration with the Engineering Council ( EngTech; IEng; CEng.)
