Role: Electronic Design Engineer
Location: Cheltenham - Hybrid (3 days onsite, 2 days remote)
Salary: Up to £64,500 DOE per annum + 10% bonus
Overview
We are seeking an Electronics Design Engineer with strong expertise in cost optimisation and value engineering. In this role, you will be responsible for analysing, redesigning, and implementing electronic solutions that reduce part costs while maintaining product quality, performance, and compliance. Your technical insight and problem-solving skills will be central to ensuring the products remain competitive.
As part of a cross functional engineering team, you will take ownership of identifying and delivering design driven cost reduction initiatives. This will involve assessing technical trade offs, validating design changes, and ensuring seamless integration into production. You will also engage directly with customers and internal stakeholders to balance affordability with functionality, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
* Analyse existing circuit designs, component selection, and manufacturing processes to identify cost saving opportunities without compromising performance.
* Evaluate the effect of proposed design changes on electronic system behaviour, safety, compliance, and customer requirements.
* Implement design changes through schematic updates, PCB redesigns, prototyping, and validation testing to ensure functional and regulatory compliance.
* Partner with mechanical engineers, manufacturing, procurement, and supply chain teams to ensure design changes align with cost, quality, and delivery goals.
* Present design modifications to customers, ensuring transparency, technical accuracy, and alignment with their expectations.
* Identify risks in proposed cost-reduction measures and ensure all changes comply with industry standards, certification requirements, and safety regulations.
* Apply lean engineering, design-for-cost, and value analysis methodologies to drive ongoing product affordability improvements.
* Generate detailed technical documentation, drawings, and change control records to support seamless product updates.
Skills:
* Proven track record in electronics design engineering, with emphasis on product cost reduction. value engineering and manufacturing.
* Strong knowledge of electronic components, circuit design, PCB layout, and system integration.
* Experience with CAD/EDA tools, circuit simulation, and design verification methodologies.
* Familiarity with design for manufacture (DFM), design-for-cost, and lean engineering principles.
* Industry background in aerospace, automotive, industrial, or other high tech sectors is preferred.
* Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to balance cost, quality, and performance.
* Working knowledge of industry standards, safety regulations, and product qualification processes.
Educational Background:
* Bachelor's degree in relevant field from an accredited university or college (or equivalent knowledge and experience)
