Job Description
Embedded IoT Software Engineer – Contract
Essex (Hybrid – mostly remote, occasional site visits)
3–6 Month Contract
£45/50 per hour (Outside IR35)
The Role
We are seeking an Embedded IoT Software Engineer to help deliver the connectivity layer between our hardware devices and a SaaS platform. The work will include:
* Modifying and refactoring code on an existing embedded controller so it can connect seamlessly to multiple third-party gateways.
* Developing new Arduino-based firmware for prototype environmental and water-monitoring devices to communicate data reliably to the SaaS platform.
* Supporting the build of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for a key demonstration later this year.
Key Skills & Experience
* Embedded C / C++ development for microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, Arduino-class boards, ARM Cortex).
* IoT protocols and connectivity: MQTT, BLE, Wi-Fi, GSM/LTE/NB-IoT, LoRa, Modbus, CAN.
* Experience integrating embedded devices with cloud or SaaS platforms (AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT desirable).
* RTOS knowledge: FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX, or similar.
* Strong debugging and board bring-up skills (oscilloscope, logic analyser, JTAG).
* Proven track record delivering IoT prototypes or MVPs to tight deadlines.
* Familiarity with OTA/FOTA updates and secure bootloaders (desirable).
Working Setup
* Mostly remote, with periodic visits to Essex area (approximately once every 1–2 weeks) for integration and testingBefore You Apply
