Engineering Authority Location Barrow-in-Furness Job Type Contract – Full-Time hours - On site Primary Industry Energy, Oil and Gas Secondary Industry Engineering Job Description The Engineering Authority is responsible for providing expert technical oversight and governance to engineering activities within projects and operational environments in the energy, oil and gas sectors. This role ensures compliance with engineering standards, company procedures and regulatory requirements, maintaining the integrity and safety of assets throughout their lifecycle. The post holder leads technical reviews, assesses engineering designs, and provides authoritative decisions on engineering matters to support project delivery and operational excellence. Job Duties Provide authoritative technical guidance and decision-making throughout project execution and operational phases. Review and approve engineering designs, calculations, specifications, and documentation to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards and legislation. Lead engineering change control and configuration management processes, ensuring traceability and integrity of design modifications. Collaborate with project teams, contractors and suppliers to resolve technical issues and mitigate risks. Ensure engineering activities align with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements. Conduct technical audits and inspections to verify adherence to engineering standards and project requirements. Provide support and mentoring to engineers and technical staff, promoting best practises and continuous improvement. Prepare and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation and reports for internal and external stakeholders. Participate in technical governance forums and contribute to the development of engineering policies and procedures. Keep abreast of industry developments, emerging technologies and regulatory changes relevant to the engineering discipline. Required Qualifications Chartered Engineer status or equivalent recognised professional accreditation. Degree in engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution. Education Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical, or relevant Engineering discipline. Experience Minimum of ten years’ post-graduate experience in engineering roles within the energy, oil and gas sectors. Substantial experience in technical authority, engineering governance or senior engineering positions. Proven track record of managing complex engineering projects and ensuring regulatory compliance. Experience in risk management, engineering change control and quality assurance. Knowledge and Skills Comprehensive knowledge of relevant British and international engineering codes, standards and regulations. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting technical information clearly to diverse audiences. Proficient in the use of engineering software tools and documentation systems. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement under pressure. Strong leadership qualities with experience in mentoring and supporting engineering teams. Preferred Qualifications Postgraduate qualification in engineering, project management or related field. Familiarity with offshore and onshore energy infrastructure and associated technical challenges. Experience working within regulated industries with a focus on health, safety and environmental standards. Membership of relevant professional institutions. Working Conditions The role is based in Suffolk, with potential requirements to visit project sites and operational facilities within the region. The post holder works primarily in an office environment but must be prepared to undertake site visits in accordance with health and safety protocols. The position involves standard full-time hours, though occasional extended hours may be necessary to meet project deadlines or respond to operational demands. Travel within the East of England region is expected as part of the role
