Looking to take ownership of carbon reporting and sustainability delivery in a hands-on role with variety, autonomy, and visible impact?
We’re seeking an Environment & Sustainability Officer to join a well-established civil engineering business on a 12-month fixed-term contract (maternity cover). Based at their Chelmsford head office, you’ll be the dedicated lead for environmental and sustainability initiatives across multiple sites, delivering carbon reduction plans, compliance measures, and site-based environmental support.
This is a full-time role combining data-driven analysis with occasional site travel (around once or twice a month), offering the scope to influence practices across a busy and diverse operational network.
About the Role
* Lead on carbon reporting for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across the business.
* Implement agreed carbon plans and support ongoing reduction activities.
* Collate and analyse sustainability data using in-house tools, tracking KPIs such as waste generation and materials usage.
* Attend client meetings to present performance updates.
* Maintain the environmental legal register and prepare for legislative changes.
* Conduct site inspections, spill investigations, and internal audits (ISO 14001, PAS 2080, CCS).
* Support the delivery of environmental training, policies, and processes.
* Ensure compliance with hazardous/non-hazardous waste regulations, COSHH, and environmental permits.
What We’re Looking For
* Previous experience in an environmental or sustainability role
* Knowledge and experience of carbon reporting
* Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and data analysis
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites in nearby area (once or twice a month)
* ISO 14001 knowledge and/or waste management experience desirable but not essential.
* Degree in a relevant Environmental or Sustainability discipline welcomed, though relevant experience will also be considered.
