Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Estimator to support the preparation of detailed cost estimates for direct work packages on major infrastructure projects. This position plays a critical role in the commercial bid process, working collaboratively across departments to deliver competitive and accurate pricing models. You’ll factor in construction methodology, project constraints, and risk assessments to develop robust cost proposals.
Key Responsibilities
*
Support pre-construction and business development activities by contributing to competitive bid submissions.
*
Collaborate with planning, engineering, and delivery teams to produce detailed estimates for work packages and associated preliminary costs.
*
Provide input into the development of construction methodologies, temporary works, logistics plans, and resource allocation.
*
Obtain, review, and validate quotes and rates from subcontractors and suppliers.
*
Align and coordinate estimates with other estimators working on the same or related bids.
*
Assess project risks and incorporate potential cost implications into the pricing models.
*
Maintain budget accuracy and monitor alignment with design evolution during the pre-construction phase.
*
Support the costing and evaluation of variations and changes during the tender stage.
*
Help maintain internal cost databases, benchmarking tools, and market intelligence for future use.
Skills and Competencies Required
*
Strong grasp of modern estimating techniques and detailed understanding of construction methods.
*
Expertise in first-principles estimating.
*
High proficiency in estimating software, particularly CCS (Candy), is essential.
*
Capable of both top-down and bottom-up estimating approaches.
*
Understanding of digital estimating tools, BIM integration, and risk management applications (e.g., QRA).
*
Excellent Excel skills, including use of pivot tables, formulas, and analytical tools.
*
Accurate and efficient in take-off measurements and quantity analysis.
*
Analytical mindset with a high level of numerical accuracy.
*
Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
*
Strong communicator, able to collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
*
Comfortable presenting complex data and cost breakdowns clearly and effectively.
*
Self-motivated, independent, and solutions-oriented.
Experience & Qualifications
*
Previous experience in estimating for a principal or Tier 2 contractor.
*
Background working on Large scale infrastructure projects Ranging from £50 million to £250 million.
*
Deep understanding of construction sequencing and its impact on project cost.
*
Experience using CCS (Candy Construction Software) is a must.
*
Sector experience in one or more of the following: Rail, Heavy Civils, Infrastructure Or TunnellingBefore You Apply
