Estimator – Main Contractor (Refurbishment & Public Sector Focus)
Location: South Ockendon, Essex
Salary: £45,000 – £60,000 (DOE) + Benefits
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent

My client are a well-established, family-run main contractor operating across London, Essex, Kent, and the South East since 1930. They specialise in refurbishment, responsive repairs, planned maintenance, and design & build projects, working extensively with local authorities, housing associations, NHS Trusts, and educational bodies.
With over 90 years of trading history and a reputation for delivering consistent, high-quality results, they pride themselves on the long-term relationships they've built and their ability to deliver projects ranging from £50k to £5m.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Estimator to join our commercial team. This is a key role within the business, supporting tenders across a wide variety of refurbishment and maintenance contracts within the public sector. You’ll be working closely with our Directors, Quantity Surveyors, and Contract Managers to develop competitive, well-considered tenders that align with client requirements and company margins.
Key Responsibilities
*
Prepare cost estimates for refurbishment, maintenance, and design & build tenders
*
Review tender documents and attend pre-tender meetings when necessary
*
Identify risks, value engineering opportunities, and commercial advantages
*
Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain quotations
*
Compile and submit PQQs and tender submissions to clients
*
Assist in bid strategy, handovers, and support the team post-tender when required
What We’re Looking For
*
Proven experience working as an Estimator for a main contractor, ideally on public sector or refurbishment projects
*
Strong working knowledge of building construction and relevant regulations
*
Excellent numerical and analytical skills with keen commercial awareness
*
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and estimating software (e.g. ConQuest, Causeway)
*
A collaborative and organised approach to work with attention to detail
