Black Hat Supervisor – HS2 (Civils & Infrastructure)
Contract Type: Freelance, Long-term

A leading subcontractor delivering major packages of work on HS2 is seeking an experienced Black Hat Supervisor to join their team on site. This role is critical to ensuring frontline delivery, safety compliance, and team leadership on one of the UK’s most high-profile infrastructure projects.
As the Black Hat, you will act as the main point of contact between the workforce and site management — responsible for ensuring operatives are fully briefed, compliant, and working in line with the programme and safety protocols. You will play a key role in maintaining productivity while embedding a strong culture of health and safety.
Responsibilities:

Act as the lead site supervisor for day-to-day operations, ensuring workforce adherence to all RAMS, permits, and method statements
*
Deliver daily briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions; update the team on changes to site conditions or tasks
*
Supervise and monitor all trades, subcontractors, and labourers across multiple work fronts
*
Enforce site safety rules, correct use of PPE, and report incidents or near misses
*
Communicate closely with Site Managers, Engineers, and Health & Safety teams to resolve issues and keep the project on track
*
Record progress, site activities, attendance, and ensure compliance with project paperwork and HS2 protocols
*
Act as a mentor and role model to the team, promoting a high standard of site behaviour, efficiency, and cooperation
Requirements:
*
Black CSCS card – essential
*
SSSTS or SMSTS – essential
*
Demonstrated experience in a Black Hat / Site Supervisor role on major civils, infrastructure, or rail projects
*
Strong working knowledge of site health & safety, temporary works, and daily operational procedures
*
Ability to confidently manage large labour teams and act as a direct link to senior site management
*
Right to work in the UK and available for long-term, site-based work
Desirable:
*
Previous experience on HS2, Crossrail, Highways England, or Tier 1 infrastructure projects
*
First Aid at Work
*
Temporary Works Awareness or Coordination knowledge
