Functional Skills Tutor – Withington (M20)
Support learners to build confidence and gain qualifications outside of the classroom.
Are you looking for a flexible, meaningful role where you can help young people progress in essential subjects? We’re looking for an experienced and understanding Functional Skills Tutor to support learners in the Withington (M20) area who are currently out of mainstream education.
You’ll be delivering one-to-one or small group tuition sessions in English, Maths, and occasionally ICT, helping learners to build up both their academic skills and their confidence. These sessions typically take place in local libraries or quiet community settings, or occasionally in learners’ homes.
The pupils you’ll support may be dealing with anxiety, SEND, behavioural challenges or medical needs — and many are working towards key Functional Skills qualifications to help them re-enter education, training, or work.
What the role involves:
Delivering tailored lessons in Maths, English and ICT to pupils aged 14–19
Supporting learners who may be working at Entry Level up to Level 2
Planning engaging sessions that meet each learner’s needs and pace
Helping build confidence, routine, and positive attitudes toward learning
Liaising with local authorities or support workers when needed to monitor progress
Who we’re looking for:
This role would suit someone who’s confident teaching or tutoring Functional Skills and who can work independently. You might be a qualified teacher, a teaching assistant with the right experience, or a tutor with a background in adult or alternative education.
We’d love to hear from you if you:
Have experience delivering Functional Skills (Maths and English essential, ICT a bonus)
Can plan and deliver engaging, adaptable sessions for learners working below GCSE level
Understand the barriers some young people face in education
Are able to build rapport quickly and motivate pupils with varying levels of confidence
Hold or are willing to apply for an Enhanced DBS on the update service
What you’ll get:
Pay rate of £25–£30 per hour, depending on experience
Flexible working hours between 8am and 4pm (Monday to Friday)
Weekly pay through PAYE – no admin or umbrella fees
Autonomy to manage your own sessions and approach
A dedicated consultant to match you with suitable roles
The satisfaction of supporting learners who need alternative education routes
