Job Purpose
To teach GCSE and/or Functional Skills English to students across curriculum areas, supporting them in achieving qualifications that enable further education or career progression.
Key Responsibilities
*
Plan and deliver engaging English lessons at GCSE and Functional Skills levels.
*
Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, and teaching resources aligned with curriculum objectives.
*
Regularly assess, mark, and provide constructive feedback on student work.
*
Use IT and digital tools to enhance learning and support blended or online delivery.
*
Conduct academic progress reviews and track learner outcomes.
*
Participate in student recruitment, including open events and interviews.
*
Complete required course documentation including registers, reports, and action plans.
*
Support students through induction, ongoing academic mentoring, and referrals to learning support.
*
Promote student attendance, achievement, and retention in collaboration with relevant staff.
*
Prepare students for progression to higher study or employment opportunities.
*
Attend curriculum meetings, quality reviews, and contribute to course improvements.
*
Participate in staff development, appraisal, and peer collaboration to enhance teaching practice.
*
Embed Equality, Diversity, and Safeguarding practices into all aspects of teaching and learning.
*
Engage in quality assurance activities, including feedback collection and performance monitoring.
*
Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment in line with Health & Safety policies.
Essential Person Specification
* A degree (or Level 3+ with 2+ years’ successful teaching experience in GCSE English).
* Recognised Level 5 teaching qualification (DET, PGCE) or willingness to gain one.
* GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (or willingness to achieve).
* Proven experience teaching GCSE and/or Functional Skills English.
* Knowledge of exam board requirements for English qualifications.
* Ability to engage and support 16–18-year-old vocational learners.
* Effective classroom management, particularly with reluctant or challenging learners.
* Competent in using IT for teaching, assessment, and communication.
* Strong organisational and time management skills.
* Commitment to safeguarding, inclusive learning, and student success
