Overview
An established logistics business is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead a busy pallet network and general haulage operation in the North East on a 12-month fixed-term contract.
This is a key operational leadership role, responsible for driving performance, ensuring compliance, and delivering exceptional service across a large-scale transport and distribution environment.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished logistics professional with proven experience in leading complex, multi-functional operations and developing engaged, high-performing teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage day-to-day site operations across transport, warehousing, and support functions.
Ensure operational excellence across all key performance areas - safety, service, cost, and productivity.
Provide effective leadership and development for a team of approximately 150 colleagues.
Manage financial performance and site budgets of around £15M, driving efficiency and profitability.
Oversee compliance with all regulatory requirements, including O-Licence, health & safety, and transport legislation.
Deliver outstanding customer service and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders.
Champion continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, cost control, and service quality.
Collaborate with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to align with wider business strategy.
Experience & Skills
Proven experience in a General Manager or Senior Operations Manager role within logistics, haulage, or pallet network environments.
Strong financial and commercial acumen, experienced in managing multi-million-pound budgets.
Excellent people management skills - confident leading large, multi-shift teams.
In-depth understanding of transport operations, compliance, and health & safety.
Demonstrable track record of improving operational efficiency and service levels.
Strong communicator and stakeholder manager, able to influence at all levels.
Hands-on, pragmatic leader with a focus on continuous improvement and delivery.
