Job Description

Geoenvironmental Lead / Technical Manager Location: Wakefield Salary: Circa £65,000 Sector: Remediation & Earthworks Reports to: Technical Director / Managing Director Overview: An established remediation and enabling works contractor is seeking a skilled and experienced Geoenvironmental Lead to act as the company’s technical authority on all aspects of ground and groundwater contamination. This is a senior-level role with a clear pathway to director-level responsibilities, offering long-term progression for the right candidate. Key Responsibilities: Serve as the primary point of contact and internal expert for all geoenvironmental and contaminated land matters across the business. Provide technical oversight during site assessments, risk evaluations, and remediation design phases. Review and interpret site investigation data (soil, groundwater, gas), including validation and verification reporting. Lead the preparation and approval of Remediation Strategies, Material Management Plans (MMPs), and Waste Classification documentation. Advise project teams on regulatory compliance (EA/SEPA/NIEA), permitting, and CL:AIRE DoWCoP protocols. Support bid teams with technical input on tenders, providing value-engineered solutions and identifying risk. Mentor and upskill engineers and project managers in geoenvironmental principles and best practice. Liaise with clients, consultants, and regulatory bodies to ensure robust, compliant, and commercially sound outcomes. Maintain awareness of evolving legislation, guidance, and industry innovations in contaminated land. Key Skills & Experience: Degree qualified in Environmental Science, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline. Extensive experience in contaminated land investigation, risk assessment, and remediation—ideally within a contractor or consultancy delivering brownfield schemes. Strong working knowledge of current UK legislation and guidance including CLR11, C4SLs, GACs, and DoWCoP. Chartered status (e.g. CGeol, CIWEM, or similar) preferred but not essential. Excellent communication skills and the confidence to advise internal and external stakeholders at a senior level. Familiarity with QGIS, HoleBASE SI, and associated geoenvironmental software is an advantage.
