Grounds Person – East London
Salary: £15 per hour
Location: East London
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Length: Temporary (until two permanent roles are filled – likely several weeks to a few months)
Working Hours: 08:00 – 17:00, Monday to Friday (some weekend work may be required)
We are working on behalf of a leading independent school in East London to recruit an experienced Temporary Grounds Person to support the Estates Team during a period of permanent recruitment. School experience as a Grounds Person is essential.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled and proactive individual with sports turf or grounds maintenance experience to contribute to the upkeep of a large and well-maintained campus.
The Role
You will be responsible for the maintenance and preparation of outdoor spaces, including sports pitches and landscaped areas, ensuring they are safe, tidy, and fit for use. Working under the direction of the Grounds Manager, you will be a key part of the Estates Team.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain football, rugby, cricket, hockey, and tennis pitches, including artificial surfaces.
* Operate and maintain a variety of machinery including tractors, mowers, and line markers.
* Carry out seasonal tasks: fertilising, seeding, aerating, brushing, and watering.
* Mark out and prepare playing surfaces for PE lessons and competitive fixtures.
* Assist with general grounds duties such as hedge cutting, leaf clearance, and snow/ice gritting.
* Ensure all equipment is securely stored, well-maintained, and used safely.
* Follow safeguarding and health & safety policies at all times.
Candidate Requirements
3+ years’ experience in a grounds, greenkeeping, or turf care role.
Confident using and maintaining groundskeeping equipment and machinery.
Holds relevant certifications (e.g., machinery operation, spraying, manual handling).
Reliable, proactive, and able to work both independently and within a team.
Must be eligible to work in the UK and willing to undergo an Enhanced DBS check and safeguarding training.
