The Role
As Hard Services (M&E) Manager, you’ll be responsible for overseeing all aspects of mechanical and electrical maintenance across a large and varied education estate. This includes managing PPM schedules, ensuring statutory compliance, overseeing contractors, supporting minor capital projects, and contributing to long-term estate planning.
You’ll also act as the key contact for building management systems (BMS), water hygiene management, and statutory inspections, while supporting the wider estates team with cost control, risk management, and energy efficiency initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day M&E maintenance operations including HVAC, boilers, chillers, plant rooms, and plumbing
*
Oversee remedial repairs, PPM schedules, and backlog maintenance
*
Lead contractor management, issuing site inductions, RAMS checks, and permits to work
*
Support minor capital projects, from defining briefs to monitoring and reporting progress
*
Maintain and develop asset registers, CALM systems, and compliance records
*
Provide professional advice on M&E engineering matters, legislation, and best practice
*
Contribute to energy efficiency planning and reduction of running costs
*
Manage budgets, cost forecasting, and financial reporting to senior management
What We’re Looking For
*
Minimum 3 years’ experience in a significant building services/M&E role
*
Recognised qualification in Building Services, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
*
Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical plant systems
*
Familiar with BMS operation, CALM systems, and statutory compliance
*
Excellent budget management and contractor supervision experience
*
Good knowledge of health & safety law and procedures (NEBOSH desirable)
*
Proven project management skills, with ability to meet deadlines under pressure
*
Experience in an educational or large multi-site estate highly desirable
