Health & Safety Manager – Water / Civil Engineering

Location: St Albans & Project Sites

Sector: Water / Utilities / Civil Engineering

Position: Permanent

We are recruiting for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join an established civil engineering contractor delivering a portfolio of projects across the water and utilities sector.

The role will be based from St Albans, but this is very much a site-focused position, with the majority of your time spent visiting and supporting multiple live projects across the region.

Projects will typically be delivered under long-term water infrastructure frameworks, with individual scheme values generally around £1 million.

The Role

As Health & Safety Manager, you will work closely with project and operational teams to ensure the highest standards of health, safety and compliance are maintained across all sites.

Key responsibilities will include:

Carrying out regular site visits, inspections and Health & Safety audits across multiple live projects.
	
Providing practical H&S advice and guidance to Project Managers, Site Managers and operational teams.
	
Ensuring projects comply with company procedures, legislation and client requirements.
	
Reviewing RAMS, Construction Phase Plans and other H&S documentation.
	
Identifying hazards, trends and areas for improvement across projects.
	
Leading and supporting accident, incident and near-miss investigations.
	
Monitoring subcontractor compliance and site working practices.
	
Supporting toolbox talks, safety briefings and workforce engagement.
	
Producing H&S reports and ensuring corrective actions are followed through.
	
Working with project teams to drive continuous improvement and maintain a positive safety culture.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

Previous experience as a Health & Safety Manager or Senior Health & Safety Advisor within construction, civil engineering or infrastructure.
	
Strong experience working across live construction sites.
	
Water/utilities experience would be highly advantageous.
	
A recognised Health & Safety qualification such as NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent.
	
Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and construction regulations.
	
Experience with audits, inspections, RAMS and incident investigations.
	
The confidence to challenge unsafe practices and work collaboratively with site teams.
	
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly between project sites.
