Job Description

HGV Mechanic Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30am–6:00pm Saturday: Alternate Saturday mornings, 7:00am–12:00pm The Role As an HGV Mechanic at Panda, you will play a key role in keeping our fleet safe, compliant and operational. This is a hands-on workshop role focused on planned maintenance, preventative work, inspections, fault diagnosis and repairs. You will help ensure vehicles are maintained to a high standard, downtime is kept to a minimum, and all maintenance activity is accurately recorded on the company’s vehicle maintenance system. The HGV Mechanic role is well suited to someone with strong HGV/LGV workshop experience, a good understanding of Operator Licence compliance, and pride in doing the job properly. What You’ll Be Doing Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing vehicle faults to a high standard. Carrying out planned, preventative and reactive maintenance across the fleet. Ensuring vehicles are maintained in line with DVSA guidance and roadworthiness standards. Completing accurate maintenance records using the company’s chosen vehicle maintenance software. Supporting MOT preparation and working towards a 100% first-time pass rate. Attending vehicle breakdowns at the roadside or customer premises where required. Identifying whether roadside repairs can be completed or whether further workshop diagnosis or recovery is needed. Minimising vehicle downtime and supporting availability for the Service Delivery team. Communicating effectively with the Workshop Supervisor, Transport Manager and key colleagues. Ensuring parts requests are accurate and authorised in line with company process. Wearing the correct PPE and reporting defective equipment immediately. Assisting the Workshop Supervisor with scheduled equipment checks. Keeping the workshop clean, tidy and safe at all times. Reporting workshop issues promptly to the Workshop Supervisor or Transport Manager. Carrying out any other reasonable tasks in keeping with the HGV Mechanic role.About You You will be practical, organised and confident working in a busy HGV workshop environment. You’ll understand the importance of safety, compliance and accurate record-keeping, and you’ll take pride in keeping vehicles on the road. You will bring: Strong attention to detail and good record-keeping skills. A good understanding of transport legislation and vehicle maintenance compliance. A proactive, solutions-focused approach to problem-solving. The ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors and suppliers. Confidence using IT systems and electronic maintenance records. Clear written and verbal communication skills. A practical, safety-first approach to workshop activity.Experience and Qualifications Required: Experience working in an HGV/LGV workshop environment. Strong knowledge of Operator Licence vehicle maintenance compliance. Working knowledge of DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness and defect categorisation. Good written and verbal communication skills. Proficient IT skills. Category C driving licence. IRTEC Inspection Technician qualification, or willingness to complete within the first 6 months.Desirable: Experience within the waste or recycling industry. Experience using electronic diagnostic equipment. Knowledge of ADR regulations for the carriage of dangerous goods. IOSH Working Safely. Category CE driving licence.Why Join Panda?
