The HGV Technician / Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of the fleet through comprehensive maintenance, inspection, and repair activities.
The role includes carrying out routine maintenance in line with DVSA standards, diagnosing faults, completing repairs, and preparing vehicles for MOT inspections and scheduled preventative maintenance checks. The successful candidate will help maintain a fleet comprising waste collection vehicles, sweepers, food waste vehicles, and light commercial vans.
Key Responsibilities
Use diagnostic equipment to identify faults and carry out effective repairs.
Dismantle, overhaul, and rebuild vehicle components as required.
Perform routine servicing, maintenance, and repairs on HGVs and associated plant equipment.
Complete job cards, inspection reports, and maintenance records using tablets or PDA devices.
Test vehicles, equipment, and components to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and ensure compliance with workshop procedures.
Perform road tests to confirm vehicle safety and performance.
Attend roadside breakdowns and provide timely repair support when required.
Investigate and resolve non-conformance issues.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment.
Adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures.
Keep up to date with industry developments, training, and new technologies.
Team Structure
The HGV Technician / Mechanic reports directly to the Workshop Supervisor and works closely with the wider workshop and transport teams.

Experience
Proven experience maintaining and repairing Heavy Goods Vehicles.
Experience working on municipal, commercial, or waste management fleets is advantageous.
Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability.
Technical Requirements
* Experience carrying out repairs to high safety and compliance standards.
* Understanding of DVSA requirements and vehicle maintenance regulations.
* Working knowledge of COSHH regulations and environmental best practices.
Qualifications (Desirable)
* City & Guilds, IRTEC, or NVQ qualification in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
* Category C HGV Licence.
* Manual Handling certification.
* IOSH Working Safely qualification.
