Job Description

Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Location: Wakefield, WF1 Reports to: Class Teacher / SENCO / Senior Leadership Team Grade/Salary: (Apply online only) per day dependent on experience and qualifications  Contract Type: Full-time/ Part-time / Flexible Job Purpose: To work collaboratively with teaching staff to plan, deliver, and assess learning activities for individuals, groups, and whole classes. The HLTA will play a key role in supporting the progress of pupils, including those with special educational needs, and contribute to the wider life and ethos of the school. Key Responsibilities: 1. Teaching and Learning Support Plan, prepare and deliver lessons or learning activities under the guidance of teaching staff. Lead whole-class learning sessions in the absence of a teacher, following agreed lesson plans. Support pupils in accessing learning activities, adapting materials as necessary to meet individual needs. Assist with the assessment, recording, and reporting of pupil progress. Support the development of pupils’ literacy, numeracy, and ICT skills. 2. Pupil Support Foster a safe, positive, and inclusive environment that promotes emotional wellbeing and high expectations for all pupils. Provide pastoral support and guidance to pupils, using appropriate strategies to manage behaviour. Promote independence, confidence, and social inclusion among pupils. 3. Curriculum and Planning Work alongside teachers in lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons as necessary. Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and other strategies for pupils with additional needs. Contribute to the development of classroom displays and resources to enhance learning. 4. Professional Development and Teamwork Actively participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and INSET days. Supervise and support other teaching assistants as required. Maintain confidentiality and uphold the school’s policies, including safeguarding and behaviour management. 5. Administrative and Organisational Support Assist in preparing and maintaining teaching resources and materials. Undertake administrative tasks such as record-keeping, pupil observations, and preparing reports. Support with the organisation of school trips, events, and activities. Person Specification: Essential: HLTA status or equivalent Level 4 qualification. Proven experience working with primary-aged children in an educational setting. Ability to lead whole-class teaching in the teacher’s absence. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills. A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Desirable: Experience supporting pupils with SEN or EAL. First Aid qualification. Experience using assessment tools and educational software.
