Job Description

Highway Engineer - Outside IR35

You must have Highways experience to be considered for this position.

We are looking for an experienced Highways Engineer to join our client's design team on a contract basis. This role will support the delivery of highway and active travel schemes from concept through to detailed design, ensuring technical compliance and quality output. 
You will be responsible for developing innovative and compliant designs, preparing detailed design packages, and coordinating multidisciplinary inputs to deliver robust solutions that align with network and stakeholder requirements.

Key Responsibilities 
·Develop concept and feasibility designs for highway and active travel schemes. 
·Produce detailed design packages compliant with DMRB, LTN 1/20, and local authority standards. 
·Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and bills of quantities. 
·Coordinate with specialist teams including: 
oRoad safety 
oDrainage 
oTraffic signals 
·Manage stakeholder expectations, including councillors, residents, and internal colleagues. 
·Ensure designs are technically robust, buildable, and aligned with wider network strategies. 
·Support design reviews and quality assurance checks.

About You - Essential Requirements 
·Demonstrable experience in highway or active travel design delivery. 
·Strong understanding of DMRB, LTN 1/20, and relevant local authority design standards. 
·Proficiency in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civils 3D or similar). 
·Experience preparing specifications and bills of quantities. 
·Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills. 
·Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary inputs and deliver outputs to deadlines.
